Assessing Online Courses

Rubric Pairs (Khadija Osman & Ines De Almeida):

We used RubiStar to generate a rubric for these courses. In our rubric we focused on the elements of
Presentation, User friendliness, Originality of the course, Inclusion, the Content as well as the Multimodal
texts that were used in terms of relatibility and attractiveness.

Online Course 1 - ALISON ABC IT - Computer Training Suite Course:

Intro - Individual
This course is a basic computer skills course comprising the fundamentals of computing, explaining
everything from the components of a computer to using e-mail and browsing the Web. It consists of the
Basic Concepts, Software Applications and Practical IT Skills. The course starts off very basic and
progresses to more complex work as the course moves forward. The marks for this course will be
highlighted in BLUE in the rubric. Here is the link to the course: http://alison.com/courses/ABC-IT/content

Writing - Individual
Presentation: 9 There was a good use of colours, effects and animations presenting the course as well as
a voice and text to assist it. The overall presentation of the course is excellent. However, there is a slight
monotony in the presentation of this course.
Attractiveness: 8 The course is very attractive in terms of its uses of different colours and graphics. There
are real pictures to represent the text.
Multimodal Text: 8 There are several multimodal texts used in this course for example text, graphics,
animation and sound. There are also online tests within the course.
Content: 9 The content is quite deep and there is extensive coverage on the topic. There are several
components covered in each part of the course which give detailed explanations on each topic. The
terminology used encouraged the learner to expand his vocabulary in terms of computers. The content was
presented in a way where each topic followed the other which is very helpful.
Navigation: 7 The navigation is clear and easy to understand. Buttons are labelled which helps to
navigate easily and quickly. All the links are working properly. Access to each of the modules is fairly
simple and quick
Inclusion: 7 This course caters for all types of learners. There is audio for visually impaired learners as
well as visuals for auditory impaired learners. Animations are used to help explain the sound and text
better.
Originality: 6 This course could have been more original in terms of visuals, however standard visuals
were used in order to cater for all learners. What I liked about the audio was that it was a person speaking
and not a computer generated voice this is very original.
Source: 10 All the sources used in the course was appropriate to the content.

Online Course 2 UNISA Learn to speak an African Language:

Intro - Individual
This course is offered to English speaking people and allows the opportunity to learn to speak an African
Official Language (Zulu, Tswana, Northern and Southern Sotho, and Xhosa). It consists of basic everyday
phrases in the languages, as well as numbers, greetings, colours and so on. It also provides and interesting
history around each language and where exactly in the country it is spoken. The marks for this course will
be highlighted in YELLOW in the rubric. Here is the link to the course:

Writing Individual
Presentation: 3 Layout was slightly boring. Unable to focus as the presentation was very monotonous.
Attractiveness: 4 Not many colours or graphics used. Fonts are very small and difficult to read. No
pictures used to make it attractive.
Multimodal Text: 3 Hardly any multimodal texts used. Audio very fast and does not cater for beginner. No
pictures or animations or interaction used in the course.
Content: 6 Basic knowledge of the content, however not friendly towards learner as the audio was spoken
as though the learner was a native to the language. There content topics are presented in isolation, there is
no progress made.
Navigation: 7 Navigation seems smooth and links are working. Easy access to all topics however buttons
are not very clear and not all are labelled.
Inclusion: 5 Even though this course is for a beginner, the audio does not cater for this as it is spoken
very fast and in the mother tongue. There is no English audio available for the visually impaired.
Originality: 5 This course lacked originality. There are no innovative ideas used to present the content it
is very similar to other online language beginner courses.
Source: 4 There were not many sources in the course. This prevents learners from applying the
knowledge elsewhere as well as linking in to prior knowledge.
