STUDENT A
Student A has demonstrated sufficient understanding on applying the measurement process in measuring capacities of
two different containers. Student A chose his pencil case as a container to measure, and he was very curious as to how
many cube blocks his pencil case can hold. He collaborated with student B for the task, and they were getting excited as
more and more blocks fit in to the pencil case. He was confused about what to write after he completed the measurement,
thus coming up to me for help. As I explained the worksheet question in a slow, verbal manner, Student A wrote down the
measurement.
Yet, I saw him writing the same number for the estimation part. Thus, his understanding on what estimation is how it is
to be done before the actual measurement, how he is to observe physical attributes of the container was lacking. It
could be because student A was excited about the activity itself, that he did not quite read the instructions on the
worksheet.
After measuring the first object, he and his group partner chose another pencil case to measure. They gathered more
blocks from the next group as this container was bigger. Then, he went onto comparing the two capacities, showing the
AusVELS level 1 understanding on measurement and geometry. This time, he did not require additional verbal
instructions, and he carefully read the question, and wrote the answer by himself.
Student A showed dispositions of curiosity and cooperation in learning, as he was very engaged and excited about using
his everyday objects in a mathematics class. He collaborated well with not only his group partner, student B, but other
students as he required more cube blocks. It shows that he is a confident and involved learner, following the learning
outcome 4 of VEYLDF.
His development in confidence and autonomy was also illustrated as he asked for help initially for me to read loud the
worksheet question, but then eventually he read and answered the last question by himself. He thus developed strategies
to use in his learning in various ways. This shows Student As developing sense of identity, following VEYLDF outcome 1.
