This story is about a doctor named Aloysius Lana.

He was a newcomer in Bishop’s


Crossing, a small village in Liverpool. Two facts about him; the one that he had
gained his medical qualification and was so dark that he might almost have had a
strain of the Indian in his composition. He was known as "The Black Doctor of
Bishop's Crossing." Dr. Lana remained unmarried until his engagement was
suddenly announced to Miss Frances Morton, of Leigh Hall.
she lived with her only brother, Arthur Morton, who had inherited the family
estate. Upon the 3rd of June Dr. Lana received a letter from abroad. the
engagement was at an end.
