Introduction
Lesson Design
This lesson is designed to teach learners how to shampoo hair.
Importance
Students attending beauty school are required to master hair shampooing skill in
order to successfully pass state cosmetology certification exam.
Prerequisites
Students are expected to have completed health, safety, hair manipulation theory
before utilizing this training module.
Lesson Objectives
By the end of this lesson the learner will be able to demonstration critical
strategies used in hair shampooing. The PowerPoint Presentation will prepare
him/her for the final hands on activity.

Motivational Activity

Flash Video
Instructor will display flash video on shampooing hair. This video will showcase a
well executed hair shampooing and highlight strategies that instructor will watch
for during student assessment.

Narration:
The following video is an example of proper shampoo service. Shampooing hair
requires 13 steps. Notice that every step is labeled in the video. I will answer any
question at the end of the streaming video.

Group Discussion
Instructor will answer questions about video and briefly describe each of the
three primary activities (workstation preparation, pre-wash, and wash).
Instructor will direct student to examine the list of strategies to learn located on
page 5 of their student guide.

Time Frame
This activity will require 30 minutes.

Narration:
This is the 13 step model used to shampoo hair. This activity is divided into three
major sections. The three sections are workstation preparation, pre-wash
activities, and washing hair. Each section has several steps that must be
accomplished before you can move on to the next section. The following pictures
illustrate the process step by step. Lets review each step.

Practice
PowerPoint Presentation
Learners will watch an instructor led PowerPoint presentation. During
the presentation student will perform each of the 13 steps in sequence
using a mannequin and student guide. Each learner will be given access
to all required tool, supplies, and equipment. Students will be graded
using the previous rubric.
PowerPoint - Narration
Students, today we will demonstrate the 13 steps in shampooing hair
on a mannequin. The mannequin will represent the client in this
activity.
Prepare Workstation
The first part of shampooing hair is called workstation preparation.
There are three step required in this section. First, disinfect the
workstation. Second, assemble the products and supplies. Third,
adjust the chair position.
Pre-wash - Narration
The next phase is the pre-wash. There are five steps in this section.
First, disinfect your hands. Second, ask the client to remove jewelry.
Third, position the towel and cape around the clients neck. Fourth,
examine the clients scalp for parasites and abrasions. Finally, brush
out all tangles in hair.
The Wash - Narration
The final phase is called the wash. Three are five steps in this part.
First, disinfect the sink. Second, test the water temperature and rinse
the hair. Third, apply shampoo to the hair. Fourth, apply shampoo.
Finally, rinse the hair.

Assessments
Assessment #1 Written
Learners will list all thirteen steps in correct sequence. Learners will be
graded according to previous rubric. Learners will not be allowed to
use any use assistance from any source. Learners will complete activity
is 10 minutes.

Assessment 2 Hands On Activity
Individual students will be provided access to shampoo supplies, tools,
sink, cape and towel in order to shampoo the hair of a beauty college
customer. Students will perform all 13 steps on customer in proper
order while under the supervision of instructor. Their goal will be to
complete the project in less than 45 minutes. Instructor will grade
student based on previous rubric.
