Government Gun Control
To follow up on the proposal given about Gun Control, I found this article, which
was only published about 6 months ago. This article tells the scenario of our President
Barack Obamas dilemma with gun control in Washington. Knowing that Washington is a
major hunting area, guns are popular to posses as a resident of Washington. This is why the
idea of gun control in a major issue there. The article states the intense effort put into
revamping the nations gun control laws. The article explains Obamas actions, Every single
measure pushed by President Barack Obama expanded background checks a strengthened
federal gun trafficking statute, limits on assault weapons and high-capacity magazines -- failed to
receive the necessary 60 votes to prevent a filibuster (huffintonpost.com). Members of the
senate also proposed bills about gun control, but they were always pushed aside. They were
brought to Congress attention after one of the worst shooting tragedies in the U.S. The reason
for the gun bills being put aside, was the worry of the political image. Not wanting to rile up any
revolts against the government concerning this issue. The bill ended up failing and nothing was
changed from the original laws implemented concerning gun control (huffintonpost.com).
The purpose of this article is more informational to inform citizens concerned with this
subject. Although this article gives information on the situation that took place, there is a tone of
favoritism and persuasion giving away the side in which the author favors. The author makes it
seem as if the government failed since they did not deal with the gun control issue. The author

uses harsh adjectives describing the government, degrading their value and purpose. The author
states, Democrats could have tried to trade the assault weapons ban in negotiations later, rather
than discarding it as impossible to pass early on (huffintonpost.com). This tone hints that the
author is for gun control and this article degrading the governments decisions.
If I were pretending to be an outside spectator with no initial opinions on this subject
matter, I would notice the authors biased opinion towards implementing a stricter gun control
system. The author includes the tragic shooting of the Newtown Elementary School as an
example of why gun control should be put into our government system. This shooting killed
many young children and teachers as well by a man who was able to access a gun through
loopholes of our gun policy. The author also insinuates his opposition to the government
fulfilling the needs of the people. Basically saying that the government is corrupt, which is often
believed by many Americans to begin with. The article possess a variety of Congress members
efforts to have the gun control laws be renovated from both Democrats and Republicans. This
allows appeals to each party in order to draw more citizens in who consider themselves relevant
to this subject matter.
Although this article is persuasive, there are some illogical points as well. The author
includes a piece of evidence from a Senator, "The pressure! Oh, the outside pressures,"
Manchin said of the forces that ultimately felled him. "I guess sometimes the trappings of being
in elected office are overwhelming." (huffintonpost.com). The addition to the excuse as to why
the gun control bill did not pass through was because of the pressure of the opinions of the
people. This comes across as illogical due to the fact that the activists who were most influential
towards the politicians were the ones who wanted the bill to be implemented. Maybe the author

included this piece of evidence from the Senator in order to show the idiocy within our
government.
