Fall 2014, V. R. Murthy, Assignment 3, September 9, 2014

Maximum Stresses and Failure Criterion
Due: September 23, 2014
==============================================================================
1. The state of plane stress at a point and relative to an xy- coordinate system is given by
[

] MPa. Determine the following quantities: (a) Principal Stresses and the

Principal axes by three methods --- (i) By drawing a Mohrs circle and computing from it,
(ii) By using the transformation equations and (iii) By solving as a Matrix Eigenvalue
Problem; (b) Maximum Shear stress, the plane of maximum stress (Unit vector normal
to the plane) and the normal on this plane; (c) The state of stress on element rotated 45
degrees counterclockwise in two different ways --- (i) the transformation equations and
(ii) Mohrs Circle; (d) Show all results on properly oriented elements making clearly the
xy-coordinate system.

2. The state of stress at a certain point is given by [

] . Find the principal stresses,

principal axes, maximum shear stress and the octahedral shear stress.
3. Determine the torque on a 10mm-steel shaft when yielding begins using (a) Tresca and
(b) the Von Mises theory. The yield strength of the steel is 140MPa.
4. A circular shaft of diameter 1.5 in. is loaded by a bending moment
and by a torque
and by a axial force
If the material is
ductile with yield strength of 40,000
, compute the factors of safety using (a) the
Tresca criterion and (b) the Von Mises criterion.
5. Problem 4.24 of the textbook: A thin-walled cylindrical pressure vessel of 250 mmdiameter and 5 mm- thickness is subjected to an internal pressure of p = 2.8 MPa, a
twisting moment of 31.36 kN.m and an axial end thrust (Tension) = 45 kN. The ultimate
strengths in tension and compression are 210 and 510 MPa., respectively. Calculate the
factors of safety using: (a) Coulomb-Mohr and (b) Rankine.
