Description of Activity/Task/Experience that demonstrates I am at or above standard in
the specific skills for the standard mentioned above:
I was born and raised in Guam; a tiny island located in the Pacific Ocean. The culture in
Guam is a whole lot different than here in Oregon. A lot has to deal with the population
and landscape size difference, the different traditions and languages, the different foods
and customs, and just the overall ethnic background of these two diverse areas. For
example, the foods that my parents cook differ from the foods that my friends parents
cook. We have adobo, kadu, finadene, rice, etc. Whereas, when Im over at my friends
house for dinner, we usually eat salad, spaghetti, and pizza. This has to deal a lot with the
cultural background of the family.
In AP Government, I obtained information on political culture, which are commonly
shared attitudes, beliefs, and core values about how government should operate. This
controversy focuses on the influences a person has toward their political view through
political socialization. Major political socialization influences are school, religion, media,
social class, region, and ethnicity; but the most influential aspect of this process is a
persons family. Tracing back to global historical issues, a persons ancestors view on an
issue could potentially be the reason as to what that persons view on politics is today.
Explanation/Reflection of how the activity/task/experience described above meets or
exceeds the specific skills of the standard mentioned above:
I moved to Oregon in the beginning of my sophomore year, and although I was in major
culture shock, I coped with the fact that I could spread my culture and traditions here as
well. I developed some knowledge on the available culture festivals near me, which
helped me stay connected with my ethnic background nonetheless. Having lived here for
two years now, Ive gotten a better feel for the culture and adapted to the differential
aspects compared to Guam.
As for my family, we didnt have a say into what the U.S. government did. Our votes
technically didnt count, and our government was separate from the government here,
however Guams government is still in compliance with the Constitution and
Amendments because its considered as U.S. territory. With that, my parents havent
developed a political view or political culture. They werent a part of a political
socialization process either.
