3 new things you have learned this
school year

2 connections you have made with
your learning this school year
(either between classes or between
class and the real world)
1 thing that you would like to
learn more about before the year is
over

Unit 4: Area of Polygons and Circles

Target 4.1, Day 1

DETERMINE AND CALCULATE THE
AREA OF TRIANGLES AND
PARALLELOGRAMS (11.1)

How would YOU dene perimeter? How about area?

What kind of real world tasks would require you to nd the

perimeter or the area of an object?

What units/labels do we give to area?

All parallelograms have the same formula for calculating area.

To determine the area of any parallelogram (including squares,
rectangles, and rhombuses), use the formula

Remember that the base and height must be ___________________!

Find the perimeter and area of the parallelograms shown.

The side of a square is 14 inches. Find its perimeter and area.

Since a triangle is simply half of a parallelogram, it should not

surprising that to nd the area of a triangle, we use the formula

Find the perimeter and area of the triangles shown.

Sometimes we will be giving the area of a gure and asked to work

backwards to nd a missing dimension.
The rectangle shown has an area of 133 square feet. What is the
length of the base?

7 feet
x
The base of a triangle is twice its height. The area of the triangle is
36 in2. Find the base and height.

Warm Up 4.1
Find the area and perimeter of the polygon shown.

The base of a parallelogram is 3 times its height. If the area of the

parallelogram is 48 m2, how long are the base and height?

Unit 4: Area of Polygons and Circles

Target 4.1, Day 2

DETERMINE AND CALCULATE THE
AREA OF REGULAR POLYGONS
(11.6)

Recall that a polygon is regular if all its sides and angles are
__________________.
To help determine the area of a regular polygon, there are a couple
of new measurements that we need to discuss.

Looking at the regular polygons below, do you have any ideas on

how we will determine their areas?

To determine the area of a regular polygon, use the formula

Find the perimeter and area of the regular polygon.

You are decorating the top of a table by

covering it with small ceramic tiles. The table
top is a regular octagon with 15 inch sides and
a radius of about 19.6 inches. What is the area
that you are covering?
(Hint: Draw ONE triangle of the octagon. What information are
you missing? How can you nd it?)

Find the perimeter and area of the regular polygon.
