She aint a friend of mine. (No es amiga ma.)
We aint fools. (No somos alocados.)

Be funciona como:
1. Verbo auxiliar para formar el present continuous, past continuous, etc.;
2. Verbo auxiliar para formar la pasiva;
3. Verbo principal.
I am espaol.
(soy espaol/a.)
It is wrong.
traducen por el verbo tener: be cold/hot/hungry/thirsty/ right/wrong, p. ej.:
I was cold/hot.
(Tena fro/calor.)
Peter is hungry/thirsty.
(Peter tiene hambre/sed.)
You are right/wrong.
(Tienes razn/No tienes razn.)
Laura is 23 (years old).
Dont be silly!
(No seas alocado!)
1.2 Have
Have tiene diferentes funciones:
1. Expresar posesin (verbo principal o verbo auxiliar).
2. Formar tiempos perfectos, p. ej. el present perfect (verbo auxiliar).
3. Expresar obligacin y falta de obligacin (verbo principal).
Expresar posesin
I have a car.
(Tengo coche.)
Do you have a car?
(Tenis coche?)
Pam doesnt have a car.
Ive got a car.
(Tengo coche.)
Have you got a car?
(Tenis coche?)
Pam hasnt got a car.
Have you a car?
(Tenis coche?)
Pam hasnt a car.
I aint got a cent.
(No tengo un cntimo.)
She aint got no friends.
I had a car.
(Tena coche.)
Did you have a car?
(Tenis coche?)
Pam didnt have a car.
(Pam no tena coche.)
Espaol
have breakfast/lunch/tea
almorzar/comer/merendar
have dinner/supper
cenar
pasrselo bien
descansar/dormir
have a try/a go
What time do you have breakfast?
(A qu hora almuerzas?)
I didnt have a shower this morning.
(No me he duchado esta maana.)
Notad tambin la expresin have a cold, en la que have puede ser verbo principal o verbo auxiliar, p.
ej.:
Do you have a cold?
(Ests resfriado/a?)
Have you got a cold?
(Ests resfriado/a?)

1.4.1 Modales
Los auxiliares modales
Los verbos auxiliares modales son can, could, will, would, shall, should, may, might, must y ought.
I can swim.
(S nadar.)
They should listen.
(Deberan escuchar.)
You must come.
(Debes venir.)
You ought to go.
(Deberas irte.)
She will can come.
Se dice: She will be able to come.
(Ella podr venir.)
They will must work.
Se dice: They will have to work.
(Ellas debern trabajar.)
She cans come.
Se dice: She can come.
(Ella puede venir.)
He musts work.
Se dice: He must work.
(l debe trabajar.)

A: What is Tom doing (at the moment)? (Qu hace Tom (en estos momentos)?)
B: He is watching television.
I usually go to work by car, but this week I am going by train.
(I have lived here for 4 years.)
(No: I live/am living here since 4 years.)
1.6 Pasado

(I always went to school by bike.)
La huelga duraba cuatro das.
(The strike lasted four days.)
Qu has almorzado?
(What did you have for breakfast?)
Perdname. No te he odo. Qu has dicho?
Im sorry. I didnt hear you. What did you say?
A: What were you doing at 3 oclock this afternoon? (Qu hacas a la 3 de esta tarde?)
B: At 3 oclock? I was working, of course. (A las 3? Trabajaba, por descontado.)
At half-time they were losing, but they won in the end.
In 1999 I was living in Leeds.
(When I was young, I had a motorbike.)
Antes fumaba.
(She used to smoke.)

ej.:
Jack has just left the office.
(Jack acaba de salir de la oficina.)
The post has just arrived.
1.6.7 Used to
Utilizamos el verbo used to para hacer referencia a actuaciones habituales o estados continuados en el
pasado.
las afirmaciones negativas con did ... use to, p. ej.:
A: Larrys very fat these days. (Larry ahora est muy gordo.)
B: I know, but he didnt use to be.
We usually walk to work.
(Solemos ir al trabajo caminando.)
(Not: We use to walk to work.)
Hay tambin una expresin, be used to, la cual puede referirse al pasado (was, were), presente (am, is,
are) o futuro (will be), que expresa cmo se siente el sujeto (estar acostumbrado/a) ante unos hechos
ms que los hechos en s mismos, p. ej.:
Im used to hot summers.
(Estoy acostumbrada a los veranos calurosos.)
Sallys used to working at the weekend.
At first his accent was difficult for me, but soon I was used to listening to him.
I know its very noisy here but youll soon be used to it.
Youll soon be used to working in this noisy atmosphere.
Se utiliza el verbo auxiliar will (negativo will not o wont) para hacer referencia a hechos
Noel will be 19 next week.
(Noel tendr 19 aos la semana que viene.)
The new centre will open on 25th February.
(El nuevo centro abrir el 25 de febrero.)
I think it will rain tomorrow.
Eric will enjoy the change.
(Eric disfrutar del cambio.)
My mother wont change her mind now.
(Mi madre no cambiar de parecer ahora.)
Will they win next Saturday?
Well get everything ready on Friday.
(Lo acabaremos todo el viernes.)
Ill phone her tomorrow.
interlocutor/a, p. ej.:
Shall I help you?
(Te ayudo?)
What time shall we come?
(A qu hora vendremos?)
Podemos utilizar will en preguntas para hacer peticiones, p. ej.:
Will you pass me the salt, please?
(Me quieres pasar la sal, por favor?)
Will you help us next Saturday?
definitely, p. ej.:
Eric will definitely enjoy the change.
(Eric disfrutar del cambio, sin duda.)
Ill definitely phone her tomorrow.
(La llamar maana sin falta.)
There wont be any more visitors today.
(Hoy no habr ms visitantes.)
Eric will probably enjoy the change.
(Eric probablemente disfrutar del cambio.)
Ill probably phone her tomorrow.
(Probablemente la llamar maana.)
Ill phone her tomorrow perhaps.
(Quiz la llamar maana.)
La incertidumbre puede expresarse tambin con may o might, p. ej.:
Eric may/might enjoy the change.
(Eric probablemente disfrutar del cambio.)
I may/might phone her tomorrow.
(Quiz la llamar maana.)
Utilizamos be going to para expresar intencin; es decir, para reflejar una decisin previa, p. ej.:
A: How are you going to pay for the car? (Cmo piensas pagar el coche?)
B: Im going to get a loan from the bank. (Pienso obtener un prstamo del banco.)
C: We havent got any milk. (No tenemos leche.)
D: I know. Im going to buy some this afternoon.
Comparad:
E: We havent got any milk. (No tenemos leche.)
F: OK. Ill buy some this afternoon.
pasar, p. ej.:
Look at those clouds. Its going to rain.
(Mira aquellas nubes. Llover.)
Those boxes are going to fall.
(Aquellas cajas caern.)
Sarahs going to look for a job. (Sarah va a buscar un trabajo.)
Sarahs gonna look for a job.
A: Would you like to come for supper tonight? (Quieres venir a cenar esta noche?)
B: I cant. Im having supper with Peter. (No puedo. Cenar con Peter.)
C: Have you got any plans for the weekend? (Tienes planes para este fin de semana?)
D: Well, on Saturday afternoon Im playing tennis with Eric.
What time does the match start on Saturday?
(A qu hora empieza el partido el sbado?)
Our train leaves just after lunch.
Aqu tenis algunos ejemplos:
Tiempo
Activa
Pasiva

Past continuous

A: Who was this painted by? (Literalmente: Por quin fue pintado? Ms habitual en espaol:
Quin lo ha pintado? [este cuadro].)
B: It was painted by Braque.
A: Who was she rescued by? (Literalmente: Por quin fue rescatada? Ms habitual en espaol:
Quin la rescat?)
B: She was rescued by the firefighters. (Literalmente: Fue rescatada por los bomberos. Ms
habitual en espaol: La rescataron los bomberos.)
Comparad:
1.9 Imperativo
Come here! (Ven/Venga/Venid/Vengan aqu.)
not o dont lets, p. ej.:
We pretended not to be looking.
(Hicimos ver que no estbamos mirando.)
They decided not to invite Anne.
(Decidieron no invitar a Anne.)
Notad que would like y would prefer aceptan slo el infinitivo, p. ej.:
come, forget, go on, mean, regret, remember, try.
The car came screaming round the corner.
In the end we came to understand that protest was useless.
Dont forget to phone the bank.
(No te olvides de llamar al banco.)
