*NOT FOR DIALYSIS PATIENTS*

Phosphorous cannot be removed by your kidneys, so it will

Build up in your body over time.
Soften bones.
Cause calcium buildup in your blood vessels, lungs, eyes and heart; making them stiff.
Cant I just take phosphate binders?
Phosphate binders limit your phosphorous intake by absorbing it from food as you eat.
But they cant absorb all of it, and have side effects like diarrhea.
So what else can I do to lower my phosphorus?
Limit high phosphorus foods.
Take phosphate binders as directed by your doctor.
Avoid phosphate additives, they are easier to absorb.
Do not eat more protein than you need. Foods with protein have more phosphorus.
