Main Characters
Genesis 21: Sarah, Abraham, Hagar, Isaac, Maidservant, and Ishmael.
Genesis 22: Abraham, Isaac, God, and the angel of the LORD.

Genesis 21: 1-21

Sarah became pregnant and bore a son to Abraham.
They named him Isaac. He was eight days old when Abraham circumcised him, as God
commanded.
Sarah saw that the son whom Hagar the Egyptian had borne to Abraham was mocking at a great
feast. She said to Abraham, Get rid of that slave woman and her son, for that slave womans son
will never share in the inheritance with my son Isaac. Abraham was concerned about his son but
God said to him, Do not be so distressed about the boy and your maidservant. Listen to
whatever Sarah tells you
Early the next morning Abraham took some food and a skin of water and gave them to Hagar.
Hagar and Ishmael wandered in the desert of Beersheba, eventually, the water was gone, and she
thought I cannot watch the boy die. She sat nearby and began to sob. God heard the boy crying,
and the angel of called Hagar from heaven and said to her, What is the matter Hagar?... Life the
boy up and take him by hand, for I will make him into a great nation. The God opened her eyes
and she saw a well of water. She gave the boy a drink, and God was with the boy as her grew up.
He lived in the desert and became an archer. While he was living in the Desert of Paran, his
mother got a wife for him from Egypt.

Genesis 22: 1-19

God tested Abraham by ordering him to take his only son, Isaac, to the region of Moriah where he would be
sacrificed as a burnt offering on one of the mountains. Early the next morning Abraham got up and took with
him to of his servants and his son Isaac to the region of Moriah. When he had cut enough wood for the
burnt offering, he set out for the place God had told him about.
On the third day Abraham looked up and saw the place in the distance. Abraham took the wood for the
burnt offering and placed it on his son Isaac, and he himself carried the fire and the knife. Isaac asked his
father where the lamb for the burnt offering was and Abraham answered that God himself will provide the
lamb for the burnt offering. He bound his son Isaac and laid him on the altar, on top of the wood.
Then he reached out his hand and took the knife to slay his son. But the angel of the LORD called out to him
from heaven, "Abraham! Abraham!" "Here I am," he replied. "Do not lay a hand on the boy," he said. "Do
not do anything to him. Now I know that you fear God, because you have not withheld from me your son,
your only son." Abraham looked up and saw a ram and sacrificed it instead.
The angel of the LORD called to Abraham from heaven a second time and said, "I swear by myself, declares
the LORD, that because you have done this and have not withheld your son, your only son, I will surely bless
you and make your descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and as the sand on the seashore. Your
descendants will take possession of the cities of their enemies, and through your offspring all nations on
earth will be blessed, because you have obeyed me."
Then Abraham returned to his servants, and they set off together for Beersheba. And Abraham stayed in
Beersheba.

Connections
The main life connection is that faith and sacrifice could lead to
astonishing outcomes. For example, Abraham listened to God, and as
a result, he gained many descendants.
Genesis 22 could represent a metaphor for Israels life with God,
especially during the fall of Jerusalem. God has put Israel to a test in
the fires of judgment, where many children died, has called forth its
continuing faith, delivered through the fires of judgment, and as a
result Israel developed and understanding that a sacrifice was
necessary to ensure Israels future.
