ASSIGNMENT 1
Question 1
A single-phase voltage V = 400 /35o is applied to a load. The load consists of a 10
resistor, in parallel with a inductor having a resistance of 5 and reactance 15 .
Calculate
(i)
the current through the 10 resistor in vector form,
(ii)
the current through the inductor in vector form,
(iii)
real power supplied to the circuit
(iv)
the reactive power absorbed by the inductor.
(v)
the Q and S at the supply and the power factor at the supply.
Question 2
A factory receives three-phase, 415V, 50Hz power to supply its loads which consists of
the following loads:
i)
Lighting loads of 10 kW at unity power factor.
ii)
Air conditioning system loads of 36 kW at 0.85 lagging power factor.
iii)
4 induction motors each working at 40 kW at 0.79 lagging power factor.
Determine the following:
i) Total active power of the loads
ii) Total reactive power of the loads
iii) Apparent power taken from the mains
iv) Power factor at the supply.
v) If a 3-phase capacitor bank rated at 50 KVAR is connected in parallel to the
electrical installation, what is the new value of the current taken from the main
supply and its new power factor?

ferromagnetic materials?
Explain briefly the origin of eddy currents inside a ferromagnetic core and
how it causes heat losses. What is the equation of eddy current loss?
Explain briefly what is hysteresis in terms of energy losses in ferromagnetic
cores. What is the equation of hysteresis loss?
What are the names of the ferromagnetic alloys/ materials most suitable to be
used as cores for electrical machines? Why have you chosen these
materials?
