Tomislav Jovanovi
THE SNAKE MOTIF IN THE APOCRYPHA
Summar y
The variety of motifs in the apocrypha is only partially congruent with the Biblical
one. Compared to the medieval literary production as a whole, the apocrypha stand
out for their rich fantasy. Within the opulence of motifs, from both Old and New
Testament apocrypha, the snake motif is inevitable. The appearance of this creature
in the apocrypha is not only expected, but also variegated. In primordial times, it had
the form of a girl, it walked as humans do, and was Gods favorite. After its complicity
with the devil, after she took its form in order to enter paradise and tempt Adam and
Eve to sin, the snake became an obnoxious being. Its Tartarean looks take some mythic
features because it appears with two or three heads. In most apocrypha, the snake is
a stable symbol of evil and of the fear of death. The dissemination of the apocrypha
throughout the Christian world profoundly influenced the use of snake symbolism in
the art of later times.
