Name: Breanna Boddy

School: Meridian Elementary

Subject/Grade: 1st Grade
Length of Lesson: Two days: 1 hour each day
What other curricular areas will the unit cover? Writing,
Observing, Note taking
Stage 1 Desired Results
Standard(s): Physical Science States of matter
.

Understandings:

Essential Questions:

Students will understand that

-There are three different states of matter
and they all have many different
characteristics.

Questions/Scenario that focuses the learner

probes for deeper meaning
-What is matter?
-What are the three states of matter?
-What are some characteristics of each state
of matter?
-What is the difference between the three
states of matter?

Students will know

-The names of the three states of matter
-What matter is
-How the states of matter are different
-What types of matter we use/ are around us
-everyday

Students will be able to

Differentiate between the three states of
matter and categorize objects

Vocabulary
Matter, Liquid, solid, gas, wet, hard, carbon dioxide, oxygen, H2O,
Molecules
Stage 2 Assessment Evidence

What will you accept as evidence that shows the students understand
the concepts?
Attach assessment rubric

Performance Tasks:
Sorting worksheets

Other Evidence:
Completion of online games and
study guide.
Stage 3 Learning Plan

Day 1:
-Instructor will start the lesson by first giving definitions of all
three states of matter and matter in general.
Matter anything that takes up space

Solid has its own shape. Can have properties like smooth or
rough, hard or soft, flexible or rigid.
Liquid takes the shape of its container. Can have properties
like transparent, bubbly, foamy, gooey.
Gas can be hard to observe, like the air around us. Name
-Between each definition, ask students if they can think of an
example. Name more examples.
-Place a variety of items (ball, ice cube, glass of water, balloon
filled with air, beaker full of syrup, pencil) on a desk and allow
for students to approach to observe.
-Have the students take notes on all of the objects in their
science journals. Have them describe the way they move,
whether or not they can hold their own shape, what they look
like, how they feel, and how we use them.
-After they have had time to observe them, let them guess
which category each belongs to.
-Reveal answers
Day 2:
-Now allow the students to practice their knowledge in the
computer lab with the online game that has been created
- Have students complete worksheet to show final
understanding
Accommodations/Differentiations:
Low- One on one instruction during research time to help
complete worksheet.
High- Allow student to explain Matter in further detail, or to
help other students come up with characteristics of the states
of matter.
ELL- One on one instruction during research time to help
complete worksheet and online activity. Use a lot of examples
to help the student understand. Partner with high student if

needed.
Materials/Resources:
- Science journals
- Pencil
- Ball
- Glass of water
- Ice Cubes
- Balloon
- Worksheets
- Computer lab

Knowledge of Matter

I showed correct
knowledge of all of
the forms of matter
and .

I understand most of
the seasons and
understand that the
earth revolves around
the sun

I can name all of the

seasons but do not
understand how they
exist

I do not know all of

the seasons nor do I
understand how they
work

Spelling/ Usage

0-3 mistakes

3- 5 mistakes

5-10 mistakes

Lots of mistakes

Completeness/
Participation

Completed
worksheet, was
respectful and
participated during
class discussion, and
completed online
activity

Either worksheet was

very close to
complete and I
participated in all
activities, or the
worksheet was
complete and I did
not fully participate
in other activities.

Worksheet Turned in
more than one week
late, and did not
complete online
activity.

Did Not complete

online work, or did
not complete
worksheet.
