CONTEXTUAL FACTORS

MDD Standard
The teacher candidate collects data regarding the institutional and classroom
contexts, the characteristics of the pupils as a group and its diversity, using this
information to plan and deliver instruction.
1. Community in which the school is located and/or serves, municipality or
owner and school factors:
The Universidad Catlica de la Santsima Concepcin, located in Concepcin, is a
private entity, receiving some state support. It was founded in 1991 by Monsignor
Antonio Moreno Casamitjana and it is legally autonomous. This institution is a
member of the Council of Rectors of Chilean Universities and is located in the city of
Concepcin at Alonso de Rivera 2850.
Due to the state support, most of the students come from middle-class who have
scholarships

1.1. How These Factors May Impact My Lessons: Explain specific ways that
these factors may impact your lesson topics, teaching strategies, assessment
techniques, etc.
Maybe the location of the university will be an issue for some students, it is far
from coronel for example, so maybe that will impact in our lesson because there
will be some days that our students will be late, or even they will miss classes.
Also, most of the students come from middle-class and have scholarships, so they
are very familiar to the news about free education, the quality of education. That
will impact our lesson topic, because we can plan activities related to that topic in
order to motivate the students and also to make them feel comfortable with an
activity and a topic which they already know.

2. Student Characteristics and Their Instructional Implications: Below, describe

how two student characteristics you observed in your student (e.g., gender,
race/ethnicity, interests, student skill levels) might impact the way you instruct
those students. For example, your planning, motivation, management, or
assessment. For each example of the student characteristic, give a specific
instructional implication that will influence how you plan and implement your
instruction.
2.1 Description of First Characteristic of Student(s) in this Class:
The first student is Carlos Baez. He is from Puerto Montt, but now, he lives here in
Concepcion because he is studying at the UCSC. He is first year student of
Licenciatura en Historia. Until now, he has shown a higher level of English than his
classmates, also he has shown interest about the language and he has been very
responsible and participatory.

2.1.1 How This Characteristic Will Impact my Lesson:

First, Carlos and his characteristics will have a great impact in our lesson, overall in
terms of motivation. We as his future teachers have to maintain his interest in the
language through motivation. In other words, we have to plan activities than can
catch the attention of all students and also his attention. In addition to this, we have
to be very careful in the way that we plan the lesson, because a minimum detail
could demotivate him.
2.2 Description of Second Characteristic of Students in this Class:
The second student is Anibal Cid Pereira. He is first year student of Licenciatura en
Historia. He is a very shy student, he never participates during the lesson and he
does not understand what the teacher says. Until now, he has shown a lower level of
English than his classmates, but he commented recently that he has an interest
toward the language; also he thinks that English would be useful for him in his future.

2.2.1 How This Characteristic Will Impact my Lesson:

Anibal and his characteristics will have a great impact in our lesson, in terms
of motivation. The main issue is that he is a very shy student, so we will have
to keep in mind the way that we will tackle the problem. We have to mix the
motivation with the assessment, in other words, we can motivate him through
the feedback that we will give to him. As we mentioned before, he never
participates, so every single time that he will participate or we will ask him, we
will have to give him positive feedback in order to motivate him and make him
to understand that to make a mistake is not as bad as it seems.

3. Physical Aspects of the Classroom and Their Instructional Implications:

Below, describe how two physical aspects of the classroom you observed (e.g.,
posters, room arrangement, technology) might impact the way you instruct students,
for example, planning, motivation, management, or assessment. For each example,
give a specific instructional implication that will influence how you plan and
implement your instruction.

3.1 Description of First Physical Aspect:

Inside the classroom, there is a computer connected to a projector and a whiteboard.
It has the technology necessary to use any visual aid and also it has internet connection.
However, the sitting arrangement is not appropriated because of the position that the desks
have. It does not allow the teacher to look every student at the same time. It does not
promote collaborative work because students cannot interact in groups.

3.1.1 How This Aspect Will Impact My Lesson:

This physical aspect will impact in our lesson. We are XXI century teachers, so we have to
use technology in order to catch the attention of our students. At the moment of planning,
we can add activities that imply the use of the computer and the projector. In addition to
this, the internet connection is a good resource to look for extra material in order to motive
students to learn.

3.2 Description of Second Physical Aspect:

3.2.1How This Aspect Will Impact My Lesson:

3. Reflects on the importance of knowing about students and the context to provide
quality teaching
We think that is very important to know the students because we have to plan according to
the context of students have. Also, it is important because our work is to teach in the best
way possible and if we know every student we will able to encourage students to learn
English. Knowing them, we can create a closer relation in terms of confidence which plays an
important role when we are learning another language because of the affective filter.
