Description of Activities and Setting

Has anybody heard of George Washington? Ask some students
to try to tell me who he was. Why do you think it is important
to know who this man is? George Washington helped the USA
become its own free country when it was ruled by England.
Ask students if they are glad we are not ruled by another
country.
Students will be able to fill in a timeline of George
Washington, given 4 important events in his life.
Read to the class a book called President George
Washington by David A. Alder. When coming to a place in the
book where it talks about something George Washington did,
stop and ask the students has anyone done this before. For
example ooh George Washington fished and swam, do we
have any swimmers or fishermen in this class? The most
important dates they need to memorize for this lesson are the
years when George Washington was born, when he led the
Army in the Revolutionary War, When he became President of
the USA, and the year when he died. Stop and emphasize
these events when coming across them in the book. After a
few pages or more keep asking the students what has George
Washington done up to this point? Who can tell me something
George Washington has done so far. Contributions of George
Washington:
Beat the English in Yorktown, the last big battle.
Became the first president of the USA

Kept the new nation at peace for eight years

7. Closure

After reading the book ask the students to write as many

facts about George Washington as they can in their journals.
While they are doing this I will walk around the room and look
at each students ideas. Review the information in the book. I
will show them some time-lines with the event dates mixed
up. I will call on some students to put the events in order. The
events on these time-lines will not relate to George
Washington so I will be sure to make clear to them to just
focus on the dates rather than the events. This activity is for
them to practice putting dates in order before they do the
independent practice where they will cut out the dates and fill
them in on a time-line of George Washington.
Students will be given a time-line and a page of cutouts that
have the events with their dates of George Washington.
Students will cut them out and put them on the blank spots of
the time-line in the correct order. Students will need to place
all four cutouts in the correct blanks to meet the objective.
Summative Assessment students will fill in a time-line of George
Washington with four important events in his life.
Formative Assessment ask review questions during the read aloud and
after it. After every few pages I will ask them what do we know about
George Washington so far? Who can tell me some important facts about
him?
Now I will answer any questions you may still have about the
lesson. To summarize this lesson, you learned that George
Washington grew up having several hobbies, he joined the
army in Virginia when he came of age, and fought in the
French and Indian War. Later he became general of the
American Army, He led the Americans to many victories, his
greatest victory was in Yorktown which was the last big battle
of the Revolutionary War. After the war he became president
of the United States.
