CourseDescription:
Inthiscourse,studentswillworktodeveloptheskillsreferencedintheCommonCore
curriculumadoptedbythestateofNorthCarolina.Theemphasiswillbeonthethinkingskillsand
proceduresthatwillenablestudentstoexploreavarietyofgenresinreading,effectivelywritein
persuasive,exploratory,andexpressiveforms,interpretinformationpresentedandpropel
discussionswithothers,anddemonstratetheconventionsofstandardEnglishgrammarand
usagewhenwritingorspeaking.

ClassroomExpectations:
Inorderforthiscoursetobeaschallenging,worthwhile,andengagingaspossible,studentswill
needtodemonstrateamatureattitude,andtherewillneedtobeapositiveatmosphereinthe
classroom.StudentswillbeexpectedtofollowthepoliciesintheDurhamNativitySchool
StudentandParentHandbook,whichrequiresstudentstoberespectful,beprepared,andtobe
toclassontime.

SuppliesforLanguageArts/Reading:
Pleasebepreparedforclassbybringingmaterialsdailyincludingthefollowing:aCaseItBinder,
dividerswithpouches,aspiralnotebook(thatcanfitinsidethebinder),looseleafpaper,
scissors,coloredpencils,apencilsharpener,gluesticks,andpens/pencils.

Homework:
Homeworkwillbeassignedinordertopracticeandreviewtheskillsandconceptstaughtin
class.Studentsareexpectedtocompleteassignmentsontime.Mosthomeworkassignments
willbereviewedforunderstanding,completion,and/orcorrectness.Feedbackwillhelpidentify
areaswherestudentswillneedtofocusadditionaleffort.
Homeworkshouldbeturnedinthegrade7collectionbinatthebeginningofclassonthedayitis
due.Ifastudentshomeworkisnotcompletedatthebeginningofclassontheduedate,itislate,
whichwillresultina15%gradereductionthefirstday.However,thestudentwillhavean
opportunitytomakeupthelatehomeworkassignmentduringlunchandrecess.Latehomework
willreceivenocreditifitisnotcompletedandsignedbyaparentbythebeginningofclassthe
nextday.Ifastudentisabsentthedaythatthehomeworkisassigned,hewillhavethesame
numberofdayshewasabsenttomakeupthehomework.
Notebooks:
ThecontentsoftheLanguageArts/Readingsectionoftheschoolbinderwillincludethefollowing
sections:1)warmups,2)classnotes,3)workinprogress,4)vocabulary.Studentswillalsobe
expectedtokeepreturnedassignments,quizzes,tests,andprojectswiththeminthepocketsof
theirtabdividerstoreferencewhenneeded.
Quizzes:
Announcedandunannouncedquizzeswillbegivenperiodicallytodetermineifstudentshave
understoodtheconceptscovered.Studentswhoscorelessthana77%willbeexpectedtomeet
withtheteacher.
Tests,Essays,Projects:
Testswillbegivenonlargeramountsofmaterialtodetermineifstudentsunderstandandapply
theconceptstaughtduringclass.Testswillbeannouncedinadvance.Essayswillbeassigned
togaugestudentsabilitytowriteeffectively,withpurpose,andwithlittletonogrammaticalor
spellingmistakes.Essaysmaybeassignedinadvance,orduringclass.Projectswillbe
assignedinadvance,andwillbeusedtodemonstratecreativityandunderstandingofconcepts
eitherindividuallyorasagroup.Studentswhoscorelessthana77%onanyofthese
assessmentswillbeexpectedtomeetwiththeteacher.
