Overview
Able to play the role of a superpower for over seven hundred years, Byzantium retained a level of
cultural and social refinement far in advance of anything else in medieval Europe and more
comparable with the great Islamic civilizations of North Africa and the Middle East, preserving the
legacy of Rome.
The most well-known Byzantine emperor was Justinian the Great, who was active in Christian religious
arguments and simplified Roman law. During his reign from 527565 AD., Justinian also made a
concerted effort to recapture the glory of ancient Rome, through his many wars of conquest. But these
struggles came with a high cost, and would contribute to the later weakness of the empire,
Byzantium was able to maintain a literate population, a well organized central government, and a
monetary economy. The Byzantine gold coin, the Nomisma, was the international currency. In addition
the Byzantine diplomatic and cultural influence spread across southeastern Europe, to Italy, to Russia
and also to the Middle East.
The Byzantine Empire, which preserved the legacy of Rome in the medieval era, struggled against the
advance of Muslim empires throughout most of its history. Nevertheless, it was a society in which a
rich culture flourished that impacted the Eastern Orthodox Christianity, church-state relations, and
other areas.
Rationale
While the Western Roman Empire fell to Germanic invaders, the eastern half of the empire successfully fought
off the attacks and carried Hellenistic culture east. The Byzantine Empire impacted Western culture as well as
Eastern by encouraging trade, mixing cultures, and using the first form of currency. It preserved knowledge
from the Greeks and Romans. Byzantium preserved and protected the very foundations of Western civilization,
and it remains every bit as important as the ancient empires of classical Greece and Rome to civilization as we
know it. The Eastern Empire provided continuous civilization and government for over a thousand years. For
much of that time it rivaled the Roman Empire in size, and continued to field the most powerful and organized
army and navy in the known world. Byzantium was as rich if not richer than ancient Rome during most of its
history, and it maintained a culture equally advanced.
Most importantly, the Byzantine Empire helped leave an indelible religious legacy upon the world through the
spread of what would come to be known as the Eastern Orthodox Church. Byzantine monks produced icons for
use in worship and they also helped preserve classical Greek texts. Greek Orthodox missionaries also extended
the Christianity into Eastern Europe and Russia.
