Science

Reflection

After reading from the science framework, I would need to have a clear
understanding of Crosscutting concepts, in how the framework focuses not only on
disciplinary content but also the ideas and practices that cut across the science
disciplines. Furthermore, know in depth the 7 crosscutting concepts, which provide
students with connections, and intellectual tools that are related to different areas of
disciplinary content and can enhance their application of practices and their
understanding of core ideas.

My SMT 416 class, which consists of the study of earth has so far prepared
me in both science and field/ classroom. For example, in this class we have learned
about the study of earth, geology, volcanoes, earthquakes, fossils, oceanography, etc
for elementary and junior high school teachers. Through the lab exercises and
through group assignments/projects we gain the knowledge of strategies in how to
help our future students how to be taught and understand best. (E.g. we created a
strip of paper and by drawing the planets in order and its distance of the sun).

The areas of science that I feel well prepared in are the standards for
kindergarten through second grade such as developing a simple model that mimics
the function of an animal in dispersing seeds or pollinating plants. Also when
observing objects and explaining how they can be put together or change its shape.
The areas I feel less prepared in are the standards for grades 7-12 such as
developing models to illustrate the changes in the composition of the nucleus of the
atom and the energy released during the processes of fission, fusion, and radioactive
decay. Also, creating a design of a chemical system by specifying a change in
conditions that would produce increased amounts of products at equilibrium.

The artifacts that I plan to use to share in my portfolio would be from my
SMT 416 class. I plan on using an image of a paper strip we created as a group
showing the order of the Solar system planets and its distance from the sun. The
second artifact I plan on using is a California challenge project we did as a group.

The work samples demonstrate my learning in science in the content Ive
learned about earth and its components. The work samples connect to my personal
experience in the teaching and learning of science in that it will help me in my future
classroom in how to teach science the easiest way possible and make the lesson fun
and productive.
