Professional Responsibility and Accountability

I believe that I display professional responsibility and accountability in
clinical practice because I am continuously aware of the limitations within
my practice as a nursing student and I always ensure that I ask for assistance
or guidance whenever I feel necessary. I also believe that I have been very
self-aware within my practice throughout the semester, especially as I
worked through the challenge of overcoming my tendency to feel faint
during invasive procedures. I have also utilized time management skills to
organize my workload, and critical inquiry skills throughout my learning
experience while at clinical practice. For these reasons I believe that I have
not only met my goal as stated in my learning plan, but have also met the
professional responsibility and accountability entry to practice competency.
Knowledge-based Practice
I believe that I have displayed knowledge-based practice in clinical practice
because throughout the semester I have improved in my comfort level and
proficiency in conducting assessments for both new moms and babies and
educating new parents in some of the elements of caring for a newborn. This
indicates my knowledge base in this area has been developing and
expanding throughout the semester. I have also been continuously applying
relational practice skills and I show an understanding of when I need
assistance or guidance from a fellow group member or registered nurse. I
believe that I have been committed to providing on-going holistic care to my
patients, and working collaboratively with clients and other health team
members to provide the highest level of patient-centered care throughout the
semester, which is why I believe that I have met this competency. As of the

end of this placement period, I do also believe that I have met my goal to
successfully complete and teach a baby bath independently to new parents.
Ethical Practice
I believe that I have displayed ethical practice in clinical practice because I
always ensure to provide a caring and trusting environment when caring for
my clients and I put an effort towards being culturally safe and aware in my
practice. I also ensure to maintain professional boundaries with my clients
while working towards to engaging in a therapeutic relationship with my
clients. One of the ways I do this is by respecting the legal rights of my
clients, especially their privacy and confidentiality. Additionally, I have
been putting an effort towards ensuring that I am more conscious of the
unique needs that my clients may have, and have been ensuring that I
advocate for their basic needs (e.g. by asking if they need anything when I
am in the room and ensuring that they know how to contact us for any help).
For these reasons I believe that I have met this competency within my
practice this semester.
Service to the Public
I believe that I have practiced in a way that is a service to the public because
I ensure to uphold values such as honesty, professionalism, and
accountability throughout my practice, and I also have put an effort towards
building partnerships within the health care team to ensure that I am practice
collaboratively. I have respected my own limited scope of practice in
comparison to the scope of practice of RNs that worked on the unit and
ensured that I do not work outside of it. In order to keep the unit working as
efficiently as possible, I have also ensure that I properly manage resources
that I may use (e.g. supplies for baby baths), and ensured that I was aware of
emergency procedures. For these reasons I believe that I have met this
competency within my practice this semester.
Self-Regulation
I believe that I have displayed self-regulation in clinical practice because I
have embodied many of the elements of self-regulation into my nursing
practice. Some of these include my understanding of my limited scope of
practice, maintaining physical fitness so that I may practice safely,
practicing the concept of reflexivity to maintain self-awareness, displaying a

desire to continue learning throughout my nursing career, and taking

initiative to become a competent, confident, and skilled nurse. For these
reasons I believe that I have met this competency within my practice this
semester.
