Lesson Plan

Teacher: Roger Turner

Unit Name: Science Unit: Physical Science
Lesson Title: Conductors and Insulators
Grade Level: Fourth Grade

Standards
CCSS:
4-5.8 Classify materials
as either conductors or
insulators of electricity.

Objective(s)
1. The student will be
able to sort objects and
materials as either
conductors or insulators
of electricity.

Assessment
1. Using the promethean
board, students will drag
images based on their
properties specifying
whether theyre
conductors or insulators.
Students should answer
correctly on the first
attempt.
2. Using a multiple choice
quiz, students will
correctly answer eight out
of ten questions
indicating that they
understand the objective.

Materials and Resources: (1) Promethean Board (2) student Science journal (3)
pencils for each student (4) online quiz

Lesson Introduction
*How will you engage
your students in the
topic?

Procedure
*Be specific give stepby-step instructions

The teacher will use pull up a flip chart and use

questioning to activate the students previous
knowledge of conductors and insulators. He will state
the standard and explain its importance in relation to
their lives. The teacher will remind the students of the
experimental test they conducted using common
everyday materials. Then he will inform them that
after the review they will be assessed using an online
quiz.
First, the teacher will connect the experiments
conducted from the day before to the objective for the
day. We tested several objects using electricity in
order to classify them accordingly by their properties.
Materials that do not let electricity pass through them
easily are called electrical insulators. Some materials
let electricity pass through them easily. These

materials are known as electrical conductors. We use

conductors and insulators every day.
Second, the teacher will review how
conductors react to electricity. Electricity travels
easily through electrical conductors, like metals.
Many metals, such as copper, iron and steel, are
good electrical conductors. That is why the parts of
electrical objects that need to let electricity pass
through are always made of metal. Then the teacher
will use the revealer in the flip chart to uncover items
that are conductors. The class as a whole will explain
why these items are conductors.
Next the teacher will review how insulators
react to electricity. Some materials do not allow
electricity to pass through them. These materials are
known as electrical insulators. Plastic, wood, glass
and rubber are good electrical insulators. That is why
they are used to cover materials that carry electricity.
The plastic covering that surrounds wires is an
electrical insulator. It stops you from getting an
electrical shock. Then the teacher will use the
revealer in the flip chart to uncover items that are
insulators. The class as a whole will explain why
these items are insulators.
Then as a formal assessment each student
can come up to the board and drag the items based
on their properties to the correct column specifying
whether theyre insulator or conductor. They will be
able to correctly answer on the first attempt.
Lastly the teacher will use a graphic organizer
to reveal different conductors and insulators, allowing
the students to classify them by raising their hands to
answer. He will also reveal the resources this
information can be found at including science books,
computers, and by teachers. Then the teacher will
have the students take the online quiz on conductors
and insulators by going to

the multiple choice quiz, students will correctly
answer eight out of ten questions indicating that they
understand the objective.
The teacher will wrap up by reminding
students that the materials that do not allow
electricity pass through them easily are called
electrical insulators and the materials that does allow
electricity to pass through them easily are called

electrical conductors. He will remind them that this

information can be found in science books,
computers, and by teachers.
