Create folders to organize work.

Collaborative Writing Project

Hello! In the interest of giving you something relevant to take back and use in your classroom right away, we wanted to have everyone actually
participate in a collaborative writing exercise so you can see how it works in a real classroom.
In the space below, please take some time with your group members to either brainstorm ideas for collaborative writing assignments you can use
in your classroom OR design a collaborative writing lesson, well, er, collaboratively
Hello. We use it with reading groups. Teachers create folders for different reading group and post assignments. Students choose a text color for
their responses. Really changes how the face to face discussions look[1] [2] .[3] Picking a color is a great idea. I like this idea. How do you create
folders that the students can access? Can we all pick a color in this document. I call pink. Love the idea. How do you change color? Highlight the
text, then go to the tool bar.
What about writing a story together? Like someone starts, and others write the next part?--creative writing.
I have done this thing with my students as an oral activity the go around the circle making a story as we go, and I act as a scribe writing on
the interactive board as they discuss. It has been a fun beginning activity on how to collaborate and work together.
Ill start a story. Suddenly, there was a loud crash, and when I turned and looked, I saw
the tin man at ISTE.

My 3rd grade students work together to create presentations.

The first have them do is name their document and then they must share their document.
Thats a great idea. Really helps with management because they arent huddled around one computer.
Hi there! Here are some ways I use Google Drive[4] - Abby Fitzgerald, 5th Grade, Nebraska
6th Grade newsletter - they share and create documents to publish a newspaper for the school
5th Grade writing documents. We use it to write collaboratively[5] [6] [7] [8] [9] for group projects especially so students dont have to use a jump drive, or
deal with one person doing all of the work.
Comments are excellent for sharing feedback, plus you can make it so only the teacher and student can view them.
You can use Google Drive and add-ons to send a form email to parents. It is super great, and can actually plug the information and data in for you for each
specific student. We do this inD158 and it really helps with organization.
We create presentations on Famous African Americans
The research feature is great - it automatically creates a bibliography for the students. So, if they need to find images or information and they research through
the research tab (it still uses Google), then they dont have to try as hard to sort their work, because it will do it automatically.
Remind me where the research tab is please and thank you. Nevermind, just found it.

Hello friends...4th grade here

research papers
google presentations
editing activities
brainstorming
answering EQs
notes
journaling
my students have taken recess time to create presentations to share with principal and IC.. they love this...and they especia lly love the
feedback from them

4/5 Bilingual Classroom- You can tie it to reading by using Google Docs with Book Clubs or Lit Circles. Students can work together to respond to a
common text and use evidence from that text to strengthen their responses. I have also used it for Spanish writing. Students have worked together
to do research and then use docs to create a piece of writing. I then leave comments for the groups to discuss as they revise and edit the writing.
HOw do you guys share with your students? Do you create a folder and share with them or do you have the create a folder and share with you? I
create folders and share with my students...the more organzied the better. :)
Im curious about this as well. I shared a document with QR codes for students to view and scan through Google Drive. It worked well. They were
able to access both a document I created as well as PDF files I uploaded.
Oh, I didnt think of that. Like that idea too. We had the kids create a folder and share with the teacher, bu then the teacher had a lot of folders in
her drive. We tried to use the naming scheme of the folders to organize them.
Is classroom supposed to make this easier? I am hoping so.
Its also great for students to check out missed work. You can link them through a QR code pasted to a calendar to the days they missed. Less
legwork on your part to print off resources.

I teach 4th grade and we have used it do collaborate with younger grades in my school, sort of like book buddies, but writing buddies. My older
students edit the younger students' writing. We even have younger students giving the older students ideas for their writing.

Does anyone know how to use this chat feature that they mentioned? There is a chat or voice bubble in upper right corner.
For the chat feature, its the message bubble next to the comments box in the top right.

Sunday^J 29th 2014 Page 1

For the chat feature, its the message bubble next to the comments box in the top right.
I have used the comments section on the right hand side for MS student interaction. That way the document stays in tact while the students are
commenting
Just overhead an idea:
Have each student choose a color to type in for that document and make a key at the top of the page. This way you can see who is typing what
text and who is doing the most work.

I'd suggest to avoid using tables in Docs. The kids really start messing things up. Use a spreadsheet instead so the cells aren't moving around on
them when others are typing.
Do you use Google Drive to keep track of your guided reading notes as well?
These are great! Thanks for sharing.
Have you had any trouble with documentation? Sometimes with shared writing I cannot tell which student wrote what if they do not color-code their
text.
You can view the editing history and see who typed what, when.
Where is the editing history?
Clck on the "all changes saved in drive" at the top.
Go to File - See Revision History
I've found that editing student writing on Google Docs had reduced my face to face writing conferences. Does everyone still do in person writing
conferences in addition to Google?

Learning is a social process, social media fills that need for our learning.

Put small amount of time into teaching the actual tool. Say "This tool can do this,
figure out how to get it done." then that student explains to the class.

Challenge Based Learning: have time to do so more because students
are working at home.

Doing this when you dont know the content is challenging.

Start with one subject.
If they dont watch the video at home they do it at school.
Assess at school.
Can email a response (have parents edit under original writing)
Best place to make a video is in the classroom. So they go back and can
see those resources from the video.
Our time is better spent guiding students in the classroom students.

Parents get to see exactly what you are doing.
