TECHNOLOGY PLAN

2
Introduction

Hersey Jones High School is a public, four-year comprehensive high school in a suburban
district of Chicago. The school enrollment is 2100 51% male and 49% female. The population
has a 26.3% minority enrollment and 13.6% of the students are economically disadvantaged.
Academically, 74.5% of the student population is proficient in reading, and 85.3% proficient in
math. 95% of graduates attend a postsecondary institution. The technology plan is for the 20142018 school years. Hersey Jones is in year 1 of a 4 year rollout of 1:1 iPads for all students. This
will be accomplished by launching one class level each year beginning with freshman.
Technology Mission Statement
Hersey Jones High School is committed to the use of technology to enhance learning
opportunities for all learners. Our community of learners will develop the 21st century skills to
build the capacity of both students and adults in such a way that we prepare learners for the
future (Plainfield Community Consolidated School District 202, 2011). We will educate all
learners to use technology to efficiently locate, analyze, synthesize, evaluate information and
then communicate concepts from their own perspectives (Township High School District 214,
2011).
Needs Assessment
A focus group of teachers facilitated a discussion of job-related needs and technology
responses. A written questionnaire was sent to staff and community members to collect opinions
from all stakeholders to determine the current use of technology and to measure their future
needs and desires (Szuba, Rogers, & Malitz, n.d.; Washington County Public Schools. (2011).

TECHNOLOGY PLAN

Professional Development Plan

The four years covered by this plan will include this cycle of professional development
for staff. The training for staff on cycle with the rollout of iPads will begin in the summer. The
last week of June, there will be three workshop days in which staff members are able to Choose
Your Own Adventure. Each day will offer three levels of training for the novice (What is an
iPad?), intermediate (I am good with technology, but how do I use this in instruction?), and
the expert (I have a lot of ideas and am ready to develop lessons!). The Instructional
Technology Facilitator, the Assistant Instructional Facilitator, and the Library Media Specialist
(the training team) will run this training with the staff. The goal of the training is to have staff
feel confident with beginning to integrate the iPads into their instruction.
During administration week at the start of the academic year training for the Schoology,
interactive white boards, document cameras and the Apple TV will be provided. Additionally,
the Professional Learning Communities (PLC) will devote time to develop technology integrated
lessons. Throughout the year, there will be further professional development offered by the
training team during Tech Tuesdays during weekly late start PLC time. Topics that will be
covered will include appropriate and useful apps, cyber safety, effective use of a learning
management system, tips and tricks, grading on the iPad, and any other technology skills that
teachers request.
The three professional development days scheduled throughout the year will include half
day trainings on further development of integrating technology into the curriculum. Staff not on
cycle to teach with iPads will focus on integrating the other technologies available in the school.

TECHNOLOGY PLAN

11
Evaluation Plan

The evaluation of the technology plan will be done in both a formative and summative
manner. Staff will participate in a survey after each professional development session. The
training team will use the feedback collected from the responses to guide their planning of the
continuing professional development opportunities and the subsequent cycle of the trainings each
year of the rollout. At the end of every semester, students will be asked to evaluate their
experience using a 1:1 device through a survey. The TSS, the ITF and the curriculum director
will use the results of this survey to make adjustments to the program.
A questionnaire will be sent to staff, parents/guardians and administration at the end of
the academic year to collect feedback on the iPad implementation. Data will be collected on
perceived success of the device use, unforeseen problems that occurred and any other issues the
stakeholders have with regards to the rollout. The data gathered will be used in an annual review
of goals and objectives of the technology plan. Student growth will be analyzed by using state
testing data to compare growth from the years before the use of 1:1 devices.
