LESSON: Types of Context Clues

R8.A.2.3.1: Make inferences and/or draw conclusions based on information from text.
R8.A.2.3.2: Cite evidence from text to support generalizations.

work on helps to better develop the lesson and

INSTRUCTIONAL OBJECTIVES:

Students will be able to identify the type on context clue used in a sentence.
Students will use context clues to make inferences to find the definitions of unknown
words
Students will be able to explain what context clues lead them to their definition.

I. Introduction:
Review of context clues.
o Slides reviewing definition and examples.
II. Main Lesson:
Guided notes for PowerPoint
Types of context clues PowerPoint
o Type 1: Definition/restatement
Have students circle the context clue word/words that help

 Meaning is in the sentence

o Type 2: Synonym

Have students circle the context clue word/words that help
Sentence uses opposite word or definition
o Type 4: Example or explanation
Have students circle the context clue word/words that help
Uses examples or word to define

III. Independent Practice:

Types of Context Clues Practice worksheet #1-5
o Using notes from PowerPoint for help
o Write what kind of context clue it is
o Guess a definition based on the clues
IV. Closure:
Go over worksheet #1-5.
o Have students explain reasoning for definitions (what clues they used)
Do #6-10 independently.
