Objectives:

The students will conduct an experiment using the steps of the scientific method.

Include an
objective for each
standard being
taught and
assessed.
Assessment:

Introduction/
Motivational
Activity

Students will use an interactive bulletin board to properly place the scientific method
steps in the correct order.

Procedures

*The evening before this lesson is to be taught, students will be required to participate in a flipped
classroom activity. The students will be instructed to watch a YouTube video created by the
teacher candidates of the experiment they will be conducted the following day. The students will
be sent home with an activity sheet and asked to answer the following questions:
1. What are the steps of the scientific method?
2. What is your hypothesis?
3. List the materials needed for this experiment
4. Write the procedures required to perform this experiment.
Engage

The teacher candidates will review the steps of the scientific method.
Using the SMART board, the teacher candidates will explain hydrophobic and
hydrophilic materials.
The teacher candidates will remind the students of the safety procedures in a
scientific experiment.
The teacher candidates will explain each of the materials being used in the
experiment and the steps in which they will conduct the experiment.
Materials will be passed out to each group of students.

Explore
Students will be asked to observe all the materials they have received for the experiment.
Based on the information they have learned about materials that are hydrophobic and
hydrophilic in nature, the students will need to define the problem or ask a question and
record it on their experiment sheet.
Students will talk within their groups about the information they have learned.
What is hydrophobic and hydrophilic?
Are the materials hydrophobic or hydrophilic?
Students may choose a member of their group to use the
computer for further research.
Students will formulate a hypothesis and record it.
Students will conduct the experiment.
Explain
Students will analyze the results of their experiments, recording any observations they
made.
Students will collaborate within their groups and discuss whether their results proved
their hypothesis to be correct or incorrect.
They will record all information on their scientific method sheet.
The teacher candidates will clean up materials as students are working.
Elaborate
The teacher candidates will bring all of the groups back for a large group discussion.
The students will have the opportunity to speak to the large group about their results.
The teacher candidates will explain further hydrophobic and hydrophilic materials and
show the students molecules that either draw water in or repel water.
The teacher candidates will explain the molecular structure of soap, water, and milk so the
students can connect what they learned in the experiment with the new information.
Evaluate
The students will be evaluated on their ability to follow the scientific method and record
the information on their scientific method sheet.
The students will be evaluated on their participation in small group and large group
activities/discussion.

Adaptations/
Modifications

This is an inclusion classroom. There are 7 students with IEPs, 2 504 plans, and 1
ESL student. The teacher candidates will walk students through step-by-by with
the scientific method sheet and have it projected on the ELMO. The students will
work in small groups and the teacher candidates will help each group as needed.

Closure

Students will answer the following questions:

1. What does hydrophobic/hydrophilic mean?
2. Is milk hydrophobic or hydrophilic?
3. Is soap hydrophobic or hydrophilic?
4. What are the steps of the scientific method?

CLASSROOM & BEHAVIOR MANAGEMENT

Strategies:
List the strategies
you plan to use
for behavior,
materials, space,
transition, and
time
management.

In order to draw students focus back into the large group the teacher candidates
will say, 3,2,1 (students: shhh) 1,2 (students: all eyes on you).
Students will be asked to speak in their groups with their Library voices so
they do not disturb any other group.
Any student who has a behavior issue will be warned and then they will follow
the classroom discipline procedures (clip chart).
During transitions, students will be asked to discuss information in their small
groups and help with clean-up.

Rationales
Your Science Classroom explains how beneficial using the 5 Es model is and
how to effectively incorporate it into every lesson. The 5 Es model is an
efficient method to follow. Following this method ensures the students will
receive a well-rounded lesson. It also allows for modifications to easily be made
if there are any students with disabilities in the classroom. It is an easy, yet
efficient, hands-on strategy to follow.
Your Science Classroom suggests that assessments be kept simple, KISS (Keep
It Simple Silly), and to use a variety of assessments. We will use oral
assessments and written assessment. The experiment process assesses their
ability to conduct an experiment and follow the scientific method.
