Homoeopathic Pharmacopoeia of India

Homoeopathic Pharmacopoeia Committe is constituted with the following objectivesTo prepare


Pharmacopoeia of Homoeopathic drugs whose therapeutic usefulness have been proved on the lines of
the American, German and British HomoeopathicPharmacopoeial;To lay down principles and standards
for the preparation of Homoeopathic drugs;To lay down test of identity, quality, purity; andSuch other
matters as are incidental and necessary for the preparation of a
HomoeopathicPharmacopoeia.Homoeopathic Pharmacopoeia Committee has been assigned the above
work besides to prepare Homoeopathic pharmaceutical codex.The Homoeopathic Pharmacopoeia
Committee (HPC) was constituted in September, l962on the recommendations of the Homoeopathic
Advisory Committee and HomoeopathicSub-Committee of the Drugs Technical Advisory Board on the
question of control of Homoeopathic drugs under Drugs and Cosmetics Act, l940 and Rules, l945. The
sourceof Homoeopathic drugs are mostly of natural origin viz. vegetablesplants, animals,minerals,
chemicals, Nosodes, Sarcodes etc. For this purpose the Committee has expertsfrom the Chemistry,
Botany, MicrobiologyPharmacology besides manufacturers of Homoeopathic medicine and eminent
homoeopaths as well as officials who areconcerned with the work of testing and research in drugs.The
term of the Homoeopathic Pharmacopoeia Committee was initially for 3 years whichwas extended from
time to time. The Committee was re-constituted on 26th May, l997for a period of 3 years.The Chairman
of the Committee has the powers to form sub-Committee whenever required and to co-opt experts from
outside.Work done so farThe Homoeopathic drugs are available in the market in mother tincture form
and in potency. The priority of the HPC is to fix standards upto the level of mother tincture or equivalent
i.e. of the raw materials and method of preparations. From l962 onwards theCommittee has finalised
and recommended standards for Homoeopathic Pharmacopoeiaof India as underTill date 71 meetings of
the Homoeopathic Pharmacopoeia Committee have been held.Work in ProgressThe Committee is
engaged in laying down the standards of new drugs which are left sofar and also revising the earlier
volumes. Besides these, the HomoeopathicPharmacopoieal Codex is to be prepared. Codex is a book on
drugs having supplementaryinformation for the purpose of further research work and to keep additional
informationson drug materials.How does it HelpHomoeopathic Pharmacopoeia of India (Vol. I-VI) have
become official in terms of Schedule-II of the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, l940 and Rules, l945. Hence
Indianmanufacturers are legally bound to manufacture Homoeopathic medicines as per standards and
methodology given in the Homoeopathic Pharmacopoeia of India. If some

of the drugs are not included in the Homoeopathic Pharmacopoeia of India,manufacturers are free to
undertake manufacturing as per any recognised Pharmacopoeiaof the other countries vis the German
Homoeopathic Pharmacopoeia, United StatesHomoeopathic Pharmacopoeia, British Homoeopathic
Pharmacopoeia and FrenchHomoeopathic Pharmacopoeia etc. Import and Export of Homoeopathic
medicinesshould also be based on the standards as laid down in the Pharmacopoeia. HPI also helpsin the
checking/testing of standards of Homoeopathic raw-materials and finished product.TARGETS:Approx.
1600 single drugs are to be included in HPI/Codex. Standards on 916 drugs havealready been laid down
by the Committee.The present Committee will achieve the following targets within the next three
years:i) Standards of raw materials l20 per year ii)The Committee shall complete publication of
Homoeopathic Codex for which materialis already available.Future Plans (Long term strategy)Revision of
the standard already laid down based on advancement in the scientificknowledgePreparation of
Homoeopathic Codex.Formulate standards for combination preparation used in Homoeopathy and
