Practicum Reflection-Guided Reading Lesson

Name of Book: N/A

Level: N/A

1. What was the area of focus today during the lesson? What activities related to the area of focus
did the teacher include in the lesson today?

The students focused on writing letters today. They had to write a letter to their parents about their
reading levels and their Lexile levels. The kids wrote word for word exactly what Mrs. Robinson
wrote on the board. She put blanks on the parts where they filled in the actual numbers. She went
over how you have to have a greeting, then a comma. Then at the end she wrote sincerely and put a
blank for their name. Some of the kids were really excited to write the letters for their parents
because their levels went up!

2. What went well with the instruction? What did students learn?
The writing of the letters went well, I think that they got finished faster than she anticipated they would.
She then had us read with some of the kids one on one. There were some children in the class who still
havent taken a reading test and passed it. So they are struggling with comprehension. So it was good
that they were able to read aloud to myself and the other helpers. I noticed that while we were writing
the notes to the parents that one of the system 44 kiddos were confused about what sincerely meant. I
saw that one of my fellow Developmental Reading classmates were explaining what sincerely means
and the kiddo then understood.

3. Explain a growth moment for yourself where you realized, learned, or confirmed something
from today dealing with student achievement in the area of reading. (phonemic awareness,
phonics, fluency, vocabulary, comprehension, before/during/after reading)

I was reading with one of the kids who havent passed a reading test yet. He was reading really well! He
was pretty fast and pronounced everything correctly. I thought man how in the world has this kid not

passed a test yet? Then I decided that I would ask him a couple questions about the book, just to see if
he was remembering what he read; and the kid wasnt paying attention to what was happening in the
text at all. It was at that point that I realized that we were going to have to read that book again and I
was going to need to ask questions about the text periodically to make sure that he was paying
attention to what he was reading. That was an eye opening experience in the fluency vs.
comprehension.

4. Describe a moment when a student grasped an idea/concept-that got it! kind of moment.
How was the teacher able to facilitate this experience? Explain the situation.

Because I was only really working with this one child in fluency and comprehension; he would have to be
got it moment kiddo! In the beginning he wasnt able to answer any of my questions about the book.
But then by the end of the class period he knew that he was supposed to be thinking about the book
while he was reading; and he was able to answer nearly every question. The bell rang before the kiddo
was able to take his reading test, but I am confident that he was able to take his reading test and pass
with at least and 80%.
