STANDARD:
4.5.3. B Identify different types of pollution and their sources
I. Performance Objectives (Learning Outcomes):
A. The second grade students will identify the three types of pollution, with their
focus on land pollution, by completing a chart.
II. Instructional Materials
A. Brain pop video Humans and the Enviroment
B. Trash bags (plastic store bags reused)
C. Gloves
D. Chart

III. Subject Matter/Content (prerequisite skills, key vocabulary, big idea, outline of
additional content)
A. Prerequisite skills
1. Knowledge of the three types of pollution
2. How pollution is created
B. Key Vocabulary
1. Environment- the conditions that surround someone or
something
2. Pollution- the action or process of making land, air, or water
dirty and not safe to use
3. Recycling- to use something again
4. Garbage- anything that is or ought to be discarded as worthless
5. Water pollution- contamination of water bodies, very often by
human activities.

6. Air pollution- occurs when gases, fumes or smoke or odor are


introduced into the air in a way that makes it harmful to
humans, animals and plants
7. Land pollution- when the environment is contaminated, or
dirtied, by waste or chemicals
8. Littering- the act of incorrectly disposing garbage

IV. Implementation
A. Introduction
1. The teacher will show a brain pop video about land pollution
and recycling
2. The class will then discuss what they think land pollution is.
B. Development
1. The teacher will then hand out charts to the class
2. The students will complete the charts individually showing
a. What they think land pollution is.
b. What the definition of land pollution is.
c. A picture of what they think land pollution looks like.
3. The students will write in the chart what they think land
pollution is by themselves.
4. Once the students have written what they believe land pollution
is the teacher will show a PowerPoint of pictures and the
definition for the students to finish the rest of their chart.
5. Once the students are finished with their drawings of land
pollution the teacher will collect the charts from each student.
6. The students will then line up to go outside.
7. The teacher will hand each student a plastic bag and a pair of
gloves.
8. The teacher will then go over things not to pick up to keep the
children safe (ex. Glass etc.)
9. The class will then go outside where the students will pick up
pieces of trash.
10. Once every student has a couple pieces of trash, the class will
go back inside.

C. Closure
1. When the class is back inside the teacher will then begin a
discussion on what the students found.

2. The students will then discuss where the different pieces of


trash should be put.
3. The students will then put the trash in the appropriate disposal
areas.
D. Accommodations/Differentiation
To accommodate MR, a second grade student with Auditory Processing
disorder, the teacher will provide written instruction for the activities as well
as headphones for the brain pop video.
