With a dagger in her hand and vengeance on her mind, Darkhaven beauty Elise Chase prowls Bostons streets in search of retribution against the Rogue
vampires who took from her everything she cherished. Using an extraordinary psychic gift, she tracks her prey, well aware that the power she
possesses is destroying her. She must learn to harness this gift, and for that she can turn to only one man the deadliest of the Breed warriors, Tegan.
No stranger to loss, Tegan knows Elises pain. He knows fury, but when he slays his enemies it is with ice in his veins. He is perfect in his self-control,
until Elise seeks his aid in her personal war. An unholy alliance is forged a bond that will link them by blood and vow and plunge them into a tempest of
danger, desire, and the darkest passions of the heart. . . .
Bound by blood, addicted to danger, they'll enter the darkestand most eroticplace of all.
A warrior trained in bullets and blades, Renata cannot be bested by any manvampire or mortal. But her most powerful weapon is her extraordinary
psychic abilitya gift both rare and deadly. Now a stranger threatens her hard-won independencea golden-haired vampire who lures her into a realm
of darknessand pleasure beyond imagining.
A combat-loving adrenaline junkie, Nikolai dispenses his own justice to enemies of the Breedand his latest quarry is a ruthless assassin. One woman
stands in his way: the seductive, cool-as-ice bodyguard, Renata. But Renatas powers are put to the test when a loved one, a child, is threatened and

For nine years, the Sentinel Nika has had one goal-to save her younger sister from the Synestryn who hold her captive. Now, the psychic bond Nika
forged with her sibling on that terrible night is fading, and time is running out. But the one man who can unlock the power inside her may be the greatest
danger to her.
Born of an ancient family of clairvoyants, Marley Millet finds that her psychic gift is both unsettling and incredibly dangerous. She never wants to "travel"
again--but the choice is not hers to make. After glimpsing the fates of two missing New Orleans jazz singers, Marley knows she has no choice and must
speak up before more women disappear. Flinty cop-turned-writer Gray Fisher, who interviewed both chanteuses before they vanished, takes a special
interest in Marley's incredible story--and in Marley.
Scouring the wild clubs of the French Quarter, Marley and Gray make an unlikely and uneasy team. But their determination is matched only by the heat
between them...and the evil they have uncovered.
Ever since a false tabloid story ruined her reputation and her interior design business, Zinnia Spring has been labeled the "Scarlet Lady" of St. Helen's.
Now, headstrong Zinnia makes a living using her psychic abilities a highly prized skill that attracts the attention of another planetary outcast, Nick
Chastain. The rough-edged casino owner craves what he doesn't have respectability and he enlists Zinnia to help find his father's journal and dig up
answers to his own mysterious past. Zinnia doesn't have to be psychic to know what else Nick wants; soon they're reaching the electrifying heights of
ecstasy and danger. For when a ruthless killer crosses their search, it will take everything in their power to keep their feet on terra firma and survive a
deadly trap!
Atop psychic for exclusive Psynergy Inc., Orchid Adams has her hands full with a baffling murder; which doesn't exactly allow time for husband hunting.
Is it even possible there's a man on St. Helen's who measures up to her dreams of wedded bliss? Take her new client, Rafe Stonebraker: primitive and
elemental, an unlicensed P.I. with some serious secrets, Rafe is hardly marriage material. So why does his powerful presence have Orchid imagining
the most outrageous affair? Rafe is embroiled in solving a strange theft while thwarting a hostile takeover of Stonebraker Shipping; he needs a wife; and
fast; to salvage his credibility. Orchid Adams doesn't fit the profile he had in mind, but she fits in his arms. Will their electrifying connection end up getting
them burned?
A telepathic hunter of serial killers, Raven Whitney helps catch some of the most depraved criminals. But her work keeps her from getting close to
others, and has drained her body and spirit. In need of rest and rejuvenation, she embarks on a vacation far from home.
Mikhail Dubrinksy is the Prince of the Carpathians, the powerful leader of a wise and secret ancient race that thrives in the night. Engulfed by despair,
fearful of never finding the mate who can save him from the encroaching darkness, his soul cries out in loneliness. Until the day a beautiful voice full of
light and love responds, softly soothing his pain and yearning.
From the moment they meet, Raven and Dubrinksy are helpless to resist the desire that sparks between them. But just as fate unexpectedly brings
From afar, Sheriff Jackson Deveau has always loved Elle Drake, the youngest telepath of seven sisters. After a long time away shes finally returning
home to the small coastal village of Sea Haven. But someone has been following Elle, someone who doesnt want her to make it back. And when Elle
fails to arrive, her disappearance strikes fear in the hearts of everyone who loves her. Now its left to Jackson to uncover the mystery of Elles vanishing,
and rescue her from an unseen danger. But Sea Haven is no longer safe for anyone, and itll take the powers of all the Drake sisters and their men to
survive the coming storm.
The classified experiment is the brainchild of renowned scientist Peter Whitney and his brilliant daughter, Lily. Created to enhance the psychic abilities of
an elite squadron, it can transform their natural mental powers into a unique military weapon. But something goes wrong. In the isolated underground
labs, the men have been dying-victims of bizarre accidents. Captain Ryland Miller knows he is next. When Dr. Whitney himself is murdered, Ryland has
only one person left to trust: the beautiful Lily. Possessed of an uncanny sixth sense herself, Lily shares Ryland's every new fear, every betrayal, every
growing suspicion, and every passionate beat of the heart. Together, they will be drawn deeper into the labyrinth of her father's past and closer to a
secret that someone would kill to keep hidden.
She's a mortal with dark powers...
After a tragic accident scarred her body and destroyed her dreams, Leila never imagined that the worst was still to come: terrifying powers that let her
channel electricity and learn a person's darkest secrets through a single touch. Leila is doomed to a life of solitude...until creatures of the night kidnap
her, forcing her to reach out with a telepathic distress call to the world's most infamous vampire...
He's the Prince of Night...

For Faith and Mark, the telepathic connection they'd shared for years was nothing compared to the scorching physical connection they realized as
adults. From the first moment they came together, "erotic" was too pale a word to describe their relationship. Together they explored each other's
deepest, darkest desires. But now Mark, survivor of an ambush to his Delta Force team, is a prisoner of a terrorist group in the Peruvian jungle, and his
telepathic communication with Faith is his only contact with the world. While she searches for help to save him, they survive on dreams that take them
beyond all sexual boundaries.
What if you can enter a madman's cruel mind as he plans his vicious crimes?
What if you can see the terrified face of his prey as he moves in for the kill - but you can't stop his frenzy once he strikes?
Psychic Cassie Neill helps the L.A. police catch killers - until she makes a terrible mistake and an innocent child dies. Cassie flees to a small North
Carolina town, hoping that a quiet life will silence the voices that invade her unwilling mind. But Cassie's abilities know few boundaries. And she's
become certain - as no one else can be - that a murderer is stalking Ryan's Bluff.
It's his fury that Cassie senses first, then his foul thoughts and perverse excitement. Yet she doesn't know who he is or where he will strike. The sheriff
Terror waits just out of sight
Hiding In The Shadows
Accident victim Faith Parker has done what her doctors feared she never would: awakened from the coma that held her prisoner for weeks. But she has
no memory of the crash that nearly killed her or the life that led up to it. Nor does she remember journalist Dinah Leighton, the steadfast friend who
visited her in the hospital...until she disappeared without a trace. Now as Faith begins to regain her strength, she's shocked by intimate dreams of a man
she doesn't recognize and tortured by visions of violence that feel painfully real. Something inexplicable ties her lost memories to Dinah's chilling fate.
Sometimes evil lingers so close, you can feel it....
Seattle police sketch artist Maggie Barnes has an extraordinary gift. She listens as traumatized crime victims describe their ordeals and then uses those
horrifying recollections to draw dead-on sketches of the assailants.
Some cops think Maggie is telepathic, that she can actually enter the victims minds. Only Maggie knows the truth behind her rare talent ... and she isn't
telling.
But her secret may be exposed when a madman seizes Seattle in his terrifying grip. He abducts women and blinds them, leaving them barely alive.
Someone is stalking the little town of Silence...
Three victims have fallen to a killers savage vengeance. Each of the dead men was a successful and respected member of the communityyet each
also harbored a dark secret discovered only after his murder. Were their deaths the ultimate punishment for those secrets? Or something even more
sinister?
Nell Gallagher has come home to Silence more than a decade after leaving one dark night with her own painful secrets. Forced now by family duty to
return, she has also come home to settle with the past. But past and present tangle in a murderers vicious attacks, and to find the answers she needs,
The victims are always the same: beautiful, successful, and blond. Someone was able to coax these intelligent and confident women away from safety.
Someone was able to gain their trust long enough to do the unthinkable. Their shocking murders have terrified the inhabitants of a small, peaceful town
where such heinous crimes are simply not supposed to happen. Police Chief Rafe Sullivan knows he has to find answers fast before another woman is
lured to her death--but Sullivan literally doesnt have a clue. And when the FBI sends one of their top profilers to help, hes more than a little surprised that
his new partner is nothing like the straight-by-the-book suit he expects.Special Agent Isabel Adams is tough, fearless, determined, and every bit
Sullivans equal. Shes also psychic. And blond.Skeptical of his new partners ability to get inside the mind of a killer, Sullivan cant deny that Isabel has
There's a new psychic on the scene, and he's ready for action: introducing Lucas Jordan, the latest addition to Noah Bishop's crackerjack Special
Crimes Unit.
Lucas Jordan has an extraordinary psychic skill that police all over the country find invaluable: he locates missing people. And since being recruited by
Noah Bishop for his FBI Special Crimes Unit, Lucas has learned to hone his remarkable ability so that what he does seems little short of miraculous.
He's called in on what appear to be a series of ordinary kidnappings-for-ransom, but almost immediately Lucas realizes the situation is far from ordinary
and more deadly than anything he's ever faced before. Because a brilliant, twisted madman is out to win a sick game, matching his wits against the best

What was a woman like Brooke Kennedy doing running a guest lodge alone in the Montana wilderness? And why was her best friend so worried about

A red-hot, suspenseful novel about a free-spirited dream researcher-and the gorgeous man who brings her dreams to life.
'Isabel Wright spends her days at the Belvedere Center for Sleep Research analyzing the dreams of others. Dr. Martin Belvedere, a pioneer in the field,
recognized her unique talent for what he calls Level Five lucid dreaming - and rescued her from a dead-end job at the psychic dreamer hotline. It's
satisfying, lucrative work, but it can be emotionally draining at times. Especially when one of her anonymous subjects, known only as Client Number
Two, captures her imagination through his compelling dream narratives. Secretly, she thinks of him as "dream man.' 'Client Number Two's real name is

Anne Silver turns to her ex-CIA agent ex-boyfriend when her brother is very nearly murdered while trying to expose a clever gang of fake psychics. But
working side by side with Julian Aries puts more than her life on the line -- her heart may just be the first thing to go.
Erika Todd moved to New Orleans because she needed a change - and, well, yes, because that's what her fortune teller said she would do. Not that
she'd admit that to many people. But so many of the psychic's predictions - about her work, even finding that stray black cat - have already come true.
Now all the lonely sculptor needs is to meet and fall in love with the prophesied dark-eyed prince.
Reclusive musician Vittorio Ridgewood has a new neighbour he's been trying to avoid. Sure, she's gorgeous, but she's coming on strong, and the last
thing the 200 year-old vampire needs is to get involved with another mortal. Especially since several of his former human paramours have lately been
turning up dead.
When Lara Kirk was abducted months ago, Miles Davenport vowed he'd bring her home. But the mission failed. Miles has become totally obsessed; he
can practically hear Lara pleading for him to save her. Finding her after all this time will be next to impossible...Lara Kirk lives in a shadowy world where
reality and fantasy are one. Her captors have poisoned her body with concoctions that enhance psychic abilities--and they seem to be working. To
escape, Lara has formed a deep attachment with a man whose virile, sensual presence in her mind is her only comfort. She's not even sure if he's real-until the six-foot-five-inch powerhouse bursts in to rescue her...Once freed, Lara has no choice but to trust Miles with her life as they run from enemies
too twisted to imagine. But they're also fighting a dangerous attraction that could kill--or save--them both. Either way, it's going to be a hell of a ride...

I really tried - finally had to skip to the end. Not my style really - writing style that is, couldn't understand some of it-like Shakespear.

Real estate agent Danny Ramos has always had a knack for selling homes, but when his boss saddles him with a neglected carriage
house, Danny discovers that his abilities are more than simple intuition
On his first visit to the house, Danny is confronted with visions of a violent murder. His assistant, Biddy Gunter, doesnt seem
affected, and Danny starts to think hes going crazyuntil he gets a visit from his mother, who suggests that Dannys uncanny talent
to sell old houses may stem from his family inheritance: psychic empathy.
When Biddy reveals to Danny her own strange dream about the carriage house ghosts, they team up to investigate and discover
both the houses dark history and their own unexpected attraction. But as the hauntings turn from unsettling to downright dangerous,
Danny and Biddy need to figure out how to rid the house of its ghostly inhabitants, before their budding romance meets an untimely
end

His Secrets Can Destroy Her

From the moment Josie laid eyes on sexy, mysterious Shane Dean, she was in love. Their desire ignited a passionate affair, and
within weeks, Shane had slipped a ring on her finger. It seemed her every fantasy was coming true . . . until her new husband
disappeared without a trace. Now, two years and one broken heart later, Josie is shocked when the hospital calls: Shane has been
found . . . at a crime scene with no memory of how he got there.
Her Love Can Save Him
Shane cant remember the blue-eyed angel at his bedside-or who he even is-but he knows something isnt right. His hearing is razor
sharp, his physical strength incredible, and the urge to protect Josie overwhelming. For powerful enemies are hunting him, and Josie
is the key to discovering why. As Shane struggles to unravel his past, dangerous new truths come to light. Can he protect the only
woman hes ever loved? And can Josie trust a man she thought she knew-one who carries such a deadly secret?
The perfect murder is a work of art In one catastrophic instant, Haley Warrens estranged father was taken from her. She never got
the chance to reconnect with him, so now shes doing it the only way shes got left: by proving the explosion that killed him was no
accident.
When Tyler Brodie, the provocative and handsome P.I. hired by Haley, discovers that her father was investigating a suspected art
theft, he knows his death is no coincidence. After all, tens of millions of dollars worth of stolen art could motivate a thief to go to any

T-FLAC operative Rafael Navarro will never allow another woman to suffer the consequences of his dangerous life. But in a world

Fellow operative, and cybercrimes specialist Honey Winston prefers computers to people. But when a serial bomber threatens the
worlds financial infrastructure, shes forced to work closely with Navarro, whose notorious skill in the bedroom is as legendary as his
dexterity defusing bombs.
Honey and Rafael must fight sparks hot enough to melt their resolve, and push beyond fear itself, as they join forces in a bid to race

I like baby/pregnancy theme too. I prefer the heroine is not

I like the widower with children theme too (moreso that widow with

occupational setting that I don't really like reading contemp docs.)
- Barristers / solicitors / man of affairs
- Book authors

Luv animals ! Anything w/ doggies & cats, I'll buy =P
Not too crazy 'bout entertainment industry (singers / actors).

Less than Perfect Hero/Heroine (disabled, scarred, disfigured)

I love any book where the chracters are ugly, gimpy, insane,
disfigured, whatever.

I really don't get why people want to follow stories about good
looking people! Maybe it's because it's totally unrelatable to me?

Hey Verity I love the feuding families/conflicting ends theme. I wish

there were more books where H/H are business rivals. I really enjoy
when the heroine is an equal to the hero in the workfield. I love h/h
who are skilled warriors (archers, swordsmen, snipers, marksmen),
probably because I am very physically awkward. I like
barristers/solicitors as well.
Speaking of: you'd probably like Terms of Possession. It's probably one of
the most unique HPs I've read and enjoyed.

I'm not crazy about celebrity heroes and heroines either, especially
actors and musicians. I don't really like socialites ala Paris Hilton as
heroines. Blah!

People have a prototypical image of human beings. When they see a
hairless, bipedal creature, eyes in front of head, and so on, they recognize
this as a "person." So there is some dissonance when they hear Suzy
described as X uncommon features. It requires a revision of that
expectation and doesn't spring as immediately and smoothly to mind. That's
the short and sweet of it. LOL.

I agree that having the heroine pregnant with another man's child
can be somewhat dicey, but I've found a few that worked for me.
Usually I prefer it to be the hero's baby too, so you're not weird.;-)

I'm not sure why, but I would also tend to agree that for some
reason, it is more endearing to have a widower with kids than a
widow. Maybe it's because single mothers in general are more
common in our society, so a devoted single dad seems like really
good hero material. I also like stories where the hero or heroine is
raising a younger sibling, niece, nephew, cousin, etc.

Ok, Verity, I'm currently in the process of trying to narrow my shopping list
and reading your list above, complete with books matching each theme,
didn't help at all!

My 2 most favorite themes are:

Tormented hero and Marriage of convenience.
Nothing can top these, and when the book features both, I usually end up
loving it:). That's probably why I love The Dangerous Gentleman, since it
has both!

Other favorite themes:

*Scarred hero
*Handsome rake + spinster/bluestocking/wallflower heroine
*Amnesia
*Bodyguard hero
*Gender benders
*Unrequited love
*Gamma hero
*Forbidden love for in-laws
*Forbidden love due to social differences
*Famous hero/heroine, especially actors/actresses and athletes
*Timetravel
*Elements of magic/psychic powers a la
The Bride Finder, Bewitching

*Plain Janes
*Shotgun weddings/forced weddings/fake betrothals
*Stranded together
I dislike:
children, widowers with small children, pirates and too much action
in historicals only:)

Eh, ixnay on the carriage chases, but I don't mind a man and his gun in a
historical, for sure. ;) Women didn't handle them much, so I just find myself
utterly unable to suspend disbelief there. It's so common though (the guntoting, breeches-wearing "independent woman") that I've come to tolerate it.

I don't see a lot of swordfights since I don't read too many

medievals, but I think gunfights are easier to envision than sword
moves at any rate (and less difficult for a clueless author to mess up,
LOL).

LOL. I admit it, I am. I just find it pointless to set a story in a historical period
if you're going to write it like a modern story. That misses the whole fun (and
challenge) of setting a book in the past. Isn't the allure precisely that those
times were different (or not)? What do we like about historicals, I ask you?

I'm all for historical accuracy, but I can see a good quality adventure
plot in a historical romance that is well done and true to the period.
I've read quite a few historicals that had fantastic adventure plots.
The English love their guns. I can imagine that quite a few lords did
allow or teach their daughter to shoot. And to this day people still
practice fencing. I don't see why there wouldn't be fencing going on
in a Victorian set story.
Especially if the book takes place in an exotic setting.

Sep 29, 2009 01:59PM
I suppose there could be adventure plots, but they would be exceptions.
(And I guess, I should clarify here that when I say historicals I'm usually
thinking of novels set in Britain since I don't read that many Westerns,
colornials, etc.)

As I said, I don't mind an Englishman with a gun. Duels, etc. They

had weapons, and they used them, but in general, the upper class
men did not use them as frequently and upperclass women even
less. You could construct a novel about the exceptions to these rules,
but I don't read historicals to read about the exceptions (for the
reasons I rattled on about in my previous post, LOL.) Fencing was
really a sport more than anything. Not that I'm an expert or
anything, but as far as I'm aware the use of guns in the Victorian
period had pretty much made fencing obsolete as self-defense so it
was cultivated only by the elite with time to spare.

I often wonder myself Verity, what am I doing here? You know,

before I discovered Amazon's forums, my TBR contained only 30
books and I felt guilty about it:) Now, 1 and a half year later, my TBR
exceeds 100 books and it keeps going up rather than down!

I also love swordfights, I don't consider them as action though.

When I mean I dislike action in historicals, I mean the running
around town or countryside interviewing people, trying to find the
villain, running after or from evil men in dark alleys, visiting seedy
taverns for tips or sleeping in different inns every night. On the
contrary, I like swordfights and duels; especially if one of the
contestants is a woman:) I know it's highly improbable, but I like it
just the same. No wonder I love Lord Harry by Coulter.

Oh Danielle, Judith Ivory is one of my all time favorite authors and I've only
read 4 of her books. BUT EVERY ONE of her books so far is a 5* read for
me. That's pretty rare for ANY author I've read, which is what keeps her at
the top of my list. Actually, I have all of her books published to date, but I
don't over-indulge by sucking them all up in one fell swoop, because she
hasn't published another book in years, and I have this feeling . . . life may
have interfered with her ability to write another novel, or some other
circumstances may indicate we've seen the last one. I don't want to be "out
of material" too soon. I do this with MOST of my favored authors. (Most
specifically Rachel Gibson and JI!) Sad but true. :(

"Beast" was a story I would have never independently sought from

another author because it's subject matter is so "reader specific" I
don't see myself drawn to it normally, but with Ivory's skills, it was
awesome as usual for me. (I'm pretty certain Verity has read it -- just

Me too. Its the entire though process that is really important to me.
The older virgins are awesome since they have a better
understanding of life. I think this is especially bothers me because
the heroes end up being very worldly, so I don't think its fair. And
obviously she loses arguments against the hero, since she has such
limited scope. The immature, virginal feminists get to sprout the
greatest nonsense and really, I end up feeling sorry for them.

Yup. It's fun watching the antics and when they get their book, you
get to see them eat their words. Case in point, Vikirnoff from Dark
Demon by Christine Feehan. He was constantly telling Nicolae how
to handle his lifemate. And when his turn came, he had his hands
full with Natalya.

Oh, cool! Thanks, Nisha! I like fantasy romance too. I'll take a look
when I get a little more time.

I like this too, Nisha. Have you read Galen Foley's Knight Miscellany
series? The Knight family is a large one (7 books), and I've
thoroughly enjoyed all of them except the last which I haven't read
yet. As an added bonus, books 2 and 3 are about twins Lucien and
Damien. Yum!

Reunited lovers is one of my favorite themes, especially if they're
husband/wife. :)

My favorite themes are:

Independent woman.
Tortured hero
Marriage of Convenience
Forced Brides/ Grooms
Gender Bender
Friend of a relative (always good for drama and tension)
Socially awkward/shy hero or heroine
Medieval setting
Mystery
Nerdy/Geek/Genius
One character has liked the other for a long time, but it takes the
other to see the one in more than a friend way.
Heck, i'll usually read anything that sounds good, but those are my
absolute favorite. ^^

I love your list, Melissa. Most of them are fave themes of mine too. I
was thinking about adding an independent heroine shelf earlier
today.

I like the independent heroines who don't proclaim their independentness,
you know?

I agree, Christy. It's annoying when they are trying to act

independent but are just clueless.

I agree as well. The sort of independence that the reader knows, but
the character isn't proclaiming it to the high seas.

Actually, it's usually the author who's proclaiming it to the high seas. *rolls
