Strategy

Name Strategy #: 10 .

Learning Logs

Brief Description (in your own words):

Learning logs are ways that students can think about concepts in reading and
writing. This can be done inside or outside of class, to reflect on what was learned, process
new understandings, and assess depth of knowledge. Learning logs promote building
background knowledge and connections, previewing, focusing on meaningful content,
purposeful reading, questioning, clarifying understandings, reviewing, analyzing,
synthesizing, and applying information to new situations. They can be assigned to each
individual students, or multiple students working in groups.

How you plan to use this strategy in your Practicum, Internship, Student
Teaching, or in your own classroom:
This strategy can be used in many ways. One of my classmates used this strategy in
his junior high class. He had them create a scientific comic about a given topic. The students
were required to use certain vocabulary words in their comic to fully address the content
and show understanding. I really liked this idea because it is fun and creative. It also
utilizes a higher level of cognition, because they have to think critically, explain, synthesize,
and apply information to new scenarios. It also emphasizes literacy skills in several ways.
First, the students are required to practice their writing skills. Second, they may also
demonstrate speaking and communication skills if they present their comic to their peers.
Lastly, they may also practice reading skills if there is a gallery walk, where they each have
to read their peers comics. I would love to give this strategy a try when I have my own
class. I have included some examples of a possible student science comics.
