Blackwood High School is a large, metropolitan co-educational secondary school of approximately 850 students.
Students in Years 8 to 10 study the International Baccalaureate Middle Years program (IBMYP), students in years 11
and 12 study the South Australian Certificate of Education.
The student cohort consists of a wide range of abilities and soci-economic backgrounds. The school staff are
committed to providing a strong thinking curriculum which meets the needs of the students and IB MYP criteria. A very
high percentage of staff are formally accredited mentors via AST and Step 9 processes.

Tim,! was! well! aware! of! the! limitations! and! strengths! of! the! students! he! was!

was! able! to! extend! those! that! were! capabable! learners.! He! asked! questions!
about! student! backgrounds! so! that! he! could! adjust! delivery! or! support! their!
needs.! The! Y! 10! class! consisted! of! students! from! N.E.S.B! and! A.T.S.I! and! he!
was! able! to! successfully! accommodate! them! into! his! learning! program! and!

This! was! an! area! of! strength.! Tim! has! an! extensive! knowledge! of! music! and!
performance! and! was! able! to! transfer! this! to! his! students.! His! skills! allowed!
him! to! connect! with! students! and! assist! them! to! develop! musically.! He!
worked! with! me! to! develop! 3! units! of! work! that! were! sequenced,! engaging!
and! purposeful.! His! content! included! practical,! theoretical! and! analytical!
concepts!in!music.!
A!particular!strength!was!his!use!of!IT.!Two!of!the!units!he!developed!involved!
considerable! use! of! recording! technologies! and! software.! He! was! able! to!
support! the! students! learning! by! his! knowledge! and! application! of! I.C.T.!
Students! were! encouraged! to! present! their! work! using! assessment! methods!
through!the!use!of!such!mediums.

Tim! worked! up! 3! excellent! units! of! work,! aligned! to! I.B.M.Y.P.! This! involved!
him! understanding! the! use! of! terminology,! assessment! and! construction!
methods! and! I.B! framework.! He! aligned! his! units! directly! to! the! assessment!
plan!students!were!working!with!and!carefully!selected!criteria!and!standards!
that!were!appropriate!to!the!level!5!in!arts.!His!preparation!was!thorough!and!
effective.! We! discussed! the! need! for! a! balanced! lesson! and! inclusion! of!
content! that! will! engage! and! planning! use! of! time! within! the! lesson.! His!
selection! of! resources! was! excellent! and! involved! ICT,! web! based! materials,!
hands! on! instrument! use! and! audio! visual! aids! within! lecturing! style.! He!
evaluated! his! teaching! programs! and! was! involved! in! preparation! for!
moderation/analysis!by!I.B.O!in!which!his!learning!materials!were!included.

Tim! demonstrated! effective! use! of! classroom! management.! The! students! he!
delivered!to!were!engaged!most!of!the!time!and!easily!referred!back!on!task!if!
they!became!off!track.!There!were!a!few!times!where!he!needed!to!speak!to!
students! individually! to! reNengage! them! or! modify! behaviour.! He! did! this!
effectively! and! within! the! schools! behaviour! management! code.! We! talked!
about! managing! certain! situations! and! Tim! always! took! advice! on! board!
readily!and!learnt!from!all!classroom!experiences.!He!managed!student!safety!
by!regularly!checking!in!on!those!in!smaller!practice!rooms!and!ensuring!that!
equipment! was! set! up! and! packed! away! appropriately.! His! classroom!
management!was!very!good!and!he!quickly!earnt!the!respect!of!the!students!
he!taught.

Tim! had! many! opportunites! to! assess! student! work.! This! was! done! both! by!
formative!and!summative!methods.!Feedback!was!given!to!students!verbally!
as! they! progressed! through! their! tasks! and! summatively! via! constructed!
rubrics! at! the! end! of! the! units.! His! assessment! of! student! learning! was!
appropriate! for! a! graduate! and! will! develop! futher! as! he! develops! as! a!
teacher.! His! judgements! were! consistent! with! mine! and! we! collaborated!
when!making!assessment!and!assigning!grades!to!students.!Tims!assessment!
data!contributed!to!the!students!term!2!and!semester!1!report.!While!he!did!
not! write! the! reports,! he! had! input! into! them.! Tim! also! assisted! with! the!
collection! of! moderation! matetrials! for! I.B! purposes! and! contributed! to! the!
writing!of!the!reports!and!cover!sheets.

Tim!had!some!engagement!in!a!limited!amount!of!professional!learning.!He!
attended!a!full!staff!meeting!where!he!engaged!with!the!Educational!

Accountability!Framework!and!review!process.!The!areas!he!really!developed!in!
were!collegiate!dialogue!around!teaching!practice!and!!the!role!of!teachers.!He!
also!spent!a!considerable!amount!of!time!familiarising!himself!with!The!I.B!
framework!and!assessment!methods.!Suggestions!were!discussed!to!improve!
his!practice!and!advice!given!to!develop!areas!required.!He!sought!constructive!
feedback!and!acted!upon!this!to!improve!his!practice!and!delivery.!!

Tims!conduct!and!professional!standards!were!what!was!expected!from!a!
reliable!student!teacher.!He!dressed!appropriately!and!followed!school!
procedures!with!signing!in!and!out!and!professional!responsibilities!with!use!of!
ICT!and!boundaries!with!students.!While!he!didnt!have!the!opportunity!to!
engage!with!parents!and!caregivers!he!did!contribute!to!a!senior!music!night!
and!met!a!few!parents!and!music!teachers.!He!demonstrated!the!potential!to!
be!a!professional!through!his!positive!engagement!with!other!terachers!and!
instrumental!music!providers!and!the!collaborative!conversations!that!came!of!
this.!

Tims!placement!at!B.H.S!was!very!productive!and!rewarding!for!both!he!and!our!school.!He!saw!first!hand!the!
relationships!required!with!students!in!a!performing!arts!subject!and!subsequently!developed!a!warm!and!
professional!relationship!with!the!students!he!taught.!He!was!a!very!diligent!student!teacher!that!always!followed!
through!with!requests!and!gave!his!time!willingly.!Outside!of!his!teaching!commitments!he!gave!up!his!time!to!
mentor!students!at!lunchtime!and!participated!in!,!wrote!for!and!led!a!Year!8!band.!Tim!accompanied!students!for!
performances!within!class!and!at!a!Senior!music!night!and!will!participate!in!a!upcoming!BHS!production.!His!pleasant!
nature!and!attitude!will!form!the!basis!of!a!dedicated!and!professional!music!teacher!in!years!to!come.!I!was!
impressed!by!Tims!involvement!within!the!placement,!his!willingness!to!learn!and!try!new!things!and!most!of!all!his!
respect!and!involvement!with!our!students.!!
