1. Rationale: Why is this lesson relevant at this time with these students?
-

To wrap up a unit on Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes by performing (with no audience) a play! This play is not
intended to be memorized or be perfect, it is to have some fun and get the kids up and moving, so they
hopefully remember the key points about diabetes, particularly the difference between type 1 and type 2
and the symptoms and treatments.

2. Provincial Learning Outcome(s): What IRP outcome(s) does this lesson develop?

3. Assessment
Lesson Outcome
What will students learn?
Students will reinforce the
information learned in
previous lessons on diabetes.

Sources of Evidence
What product or action will show
what students have learned?
We will look for participation in the
play, as well as ensuring information
in the play is accurate for their
character.

Criteria
What will you look for in this
evidence?
We will look for students to have
fun with this, be silly, be active, and
be able to easily explain vocally
what diabetes is, what the
symptoms are and how we can treat
it. This play is a way to get this
information off the paper and into
an activity.

4. Resources, Material and Preparation: What resources, materials and preparation are required?
- Props for play
- Copies of play (one for each student)

5. Lesson Development
Pacing

Introduction: How will you introduce this lesson in a manner that

engages students and activates their thinking?

Discuss with students that we will be performing a play today. Ask for
volunteers for characters, give students time to read through the
play.

Teaching/Learning Sequence: What steps and activities are you

going to use to help students acquire and practice the knowledge,
skills and/or attitudes needed to meet the outcome?

Students will perform a play with a lot of teacher assistance.

Closure: How will you solidify the learning that has taken place and
deepen the learning process?

Have students work in groups to complete the play debrief (attached

to handout of play), then go over answers together as a class.

5 10 minutes

5. Accommodations (adaptations, extensions, other): How will you plan for students who have
learning/behaviour difficulties or require enrichment?
-

If there is not time for the conclusion (due to having too much fun with the play!) then find another time to do it.
Dont take away from the play if everything is working. The debrief could also be worked on in partners and
students given more time, rather than working faster in groups.
If students seem to really be learning a lot, then perhaps you could get them to work on the debrief in partners or
groups without referencing other material, see what they can remember off the top of their head.
