Part I: What is the situation in the Ukraine?

Questions:

1. What are the three core factors that led to the chaos, according to the article?
First, there was a broken promise between the leader and his citizens. President Viktor F.
Yanukovych had promised to integrate Ukraine with the European Union by letting them
sign the political and trade agreements but then he refused to sign it after all. Secondly,
there was a Cold War-era fight that was against Russia and the West. They had this war
because Eastern Europe was suffering from political and economic problems that was
rooted in the Soviet era. Lastly, is the search of public outrage over the governments
brutal response to the street protests that followed the Presidents idea with the European
Union.
2. Why does Russia feel threatened by Ukraine forming a closer partnership with Europe?
They feel threatened because of the expansion of the Western military and because of the
economic powers that they had towards everyone which caused them to be threatened by
the Ukraine.
3. Why did many Ukrainians, especially in the Western part of the country, want Ukraine to
sign political and economic agreements with the European Union?
They wanted Ukraine to sign political and economic agreements with the European
Union because they had problems with them and they wanted to stay balanced since they
were already suffering with the political and economic problems.
4. Why did street protests erupt in November 2013?
President Viktor F. Yanukovych didnt want to move forward and this caused
Yanukovych $15 billion in loans and natural gas discounts. Then, he was reignited by the
government missteps which shows that they had many problems.

5. What were some of the government missteps that helped further fuel the protests?
The beating by the police of the young protesters on November 30th, which seized public
buildings and occupy Independence Square. Also, the protesters turned deadly and was
throwing fireballs at the police and Yanukovych tried to stem the violence by firing the
government but his own resignation grew bigger.
