LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM 2013-2015

SEMINAR REFLECTIVE SUMMARY

SEMINAR TOPIC: Mock President's Council
PARTICIPANTS NAME: Dana L. Sawyer
1.

What were the significant learning points for you in this seminar?

The Mock President's Council was a very valuable learning experience that was well-organized and
interesting. Significant learning points include: the manner in which everyone prepares for and participates
in the meetings which is of key importance; how necessary it is for all participants to think of the big picture
(i.e. College wide) along with the campus-level considerations when making decisions; and how sound
leadership encompasses the meetings to help make them coherent, relevant and on task. I was pleased to see
the President and most of the Vice Presidents represented at the meeting, as it clearly demonstrates their
commitment to our learning and the process as a whole.

2.

In what ways is each learning point supportive of or relevant to your ideas about leadership?

Good leadership qualities encompasses many things, but most importantly includes the need for
effective and timely communication/information, allowing others to share and be heard and supporting
individual differences whenever possible. Careful thought and preparation for discussions to take place
allows for fruitful interchanges and congruently sound decision-making. I like how each person on the
Council feels comfortable in sharing views, educating others within their areas of expertise and how they
actively engage one another in problem solving. Leadership is all about focusing on what is right, moral.
ethical and legal. All of us make many decisions daily - whether big or small - and to feel supported by
colleagues goes a long way towards high commitment to any organization.

3.

Identify a way to apply each of these learning points to your current role at the College.
Comments were made at the meeting that we should all be seeking knowledge and learning new
things no matter what our role is at work. Being a learning organization is paramount to creating an
evolving, dynamic entity and a good leader should always be in a listening and learning mode. Being
prepared for whatever comes our way - whether it be in the form of a question or the need for a sound
decision is essential. Leaders should be visionaries with the ability to be flexible based on others' input.
They should also be good time managers that keep meetings and people on task so that good work gets
done. I take many of these qualities to heart and try to emulate other leaders that I view as highly
effective in order to enhance my own personal leadership attributes.
