andwillbeusedasaprojectinthemiddleoftheunit.Thisprojectwillprimarilymeetthe
firststandard,thatstudentswillbeabletounderstandtheprocessesthatcreatedsome
fossils.However,thefossilswillbelaterusedtomeetthestandardsthatstudentswillbe
abletounderstandhowscientistsusefossilevidencetomakeinferencesaboutan
organismscharacteristics,examinefossilevidencetodetermineadaptationsofancient
organisms,andinferhoworganismslivedbyexaminingtheircharacteristics.
Introduction
Thislessonwillhelpthestudentsenvisionwhatafossilactuallyis,insteadofjust
learningaboutitfromtheirtextbookandteacher.Whentheclassgoesontostudyother
aspectsoffossils,suchasthecharacteristicsandadaptationsoftheorganismthatformed
thefossilthathelpedthatorganismtoliveandthrive.Itwillhelpreengagethestudents
inthetopicandgetthemmotivatedtolearnmoreabouthowfossilsareformedandwhat
wecanlearnfromthem.
Technology
Technologywillbeusedintheformoftheinstructionalvideoshowingthestudentshow

Thisprojectwillbeusedasasteppingoffpointforfuturelessonsaboutfossilsasthey
studyotherorganismsthatscientistshavestudiedandmadeinferencesabout.This
informationwillalsobeusedinfuturelessonstogiveconcreteexamplesofwhatthe
classistalkingabout,inordertokeepthestudentsengagedandmotivatedtolearn.This
lessonwillhelpstudentsengageinmetacognition,becausetheywillhavetoevaluate
theirowninferencesabouttheorganismbasedontheinformationprovidedintheir
textbooks.
