Survey of Contemporary Political Awareness and Issues
My political science class is a majority of male students which is 67%, and the other half
is female students which is 43%, the average age in my class is 23. We were asked a few
questions about our government officials, a majority of us knew who the president was which
Barrack Obama is, and this was about 91% of the class. Only about 55% of the class knew who
the vice president of the United States was, which Joe Biden is. When it came to our local
government officials, only a small percentage knew who are senators were they are; Orin Hatch
and Mike Lee. This was about 36% of the class, who knew who are senators are. The amount of
students that knew who was in the House of Representatives for the state of Utah was only 6% of
the class, a lot of the class really didnt know who they were. The people from Utah that are in
the House of Representatives are: Rob Bishop, Chris Stewart, Jason Chaffetz, and Jim Matheson.
The governor of Utah is Gary Herbert, but only 15% of the class knew who he was. My class
really didnt know much when it came to our governing body in the United States leaderships
and also those that represent us from the state of Utah.
When it came to political parties 40% of the class are conservatives and about 48% of the
class are Liberals. So I believe that the class is more liberal then conservative, since we are all
more open to topics that are in our community and issue that can affect us all. Some of the issues
that were asked to us on the survey were things we felt strongly about. One of the questions that
we asked, was should same sex marriage be recognized by the states and the government, the

students that were for this was about 73% of the class, that seem like we are more of a liberal
openness. Then to those who do not think that same sex marriage should be recognized by the
states and government, which was 27% of the class which were probably conservatives. Another
question was asked which was about immigration, and a majority voted for more restriction
when it came to immigration. When it comes to certain issue in our class, I think depending on
the issues that is asked we are either for or against it. I believe were are more liberal in that we
want our voices to be heard since a lot of the issues do affect us, whether we do something about
it or not. We as a class are more open to same sex marriage, we realize that this issue dose not
affect us in any sort of way. We see them as people and people that was to be with someone of
their choosing and they also have a right to be happy as well. We all want to see change in our
government, and would like to our voices to be heard as well. We all believe that we need
universal health care in the United States. We feel that the government needs to respect our
privacy when it comes conducting surveillance. We also feel that our rights whether it be to bear
arms or freedom of speech needs to be protected. We see that our government, which is mainly
congress need to do something instead of fighting amongst themselves. We can talk about topics
and be civil about them, when we are in our classroom and that is what makes us, the students all
unique and opinionated. With our political; views.
In conclusion, we are a diverse group of students. We all have our own opinions when it
comes to certain issues, or topics that are happening in the government. A majority identify as
liberals, and we are more accepting of issues whether it be abortion or womens right. We can
have the change we desire, if we speak up and let the government hear what we have to say on
issues or policies that can affect our lives. We are a different group of students but we can all
debate on what we see is fit when we discuss things about our government in class.
