Warm Up: Explain how

adaptations occur using Darwins

finches as an example.

Selective Breeding
Vs.
Natural Selection

Natural Selection
The process by which traits become
more or less common in a population
due to environmental pressures. They
affect the survival or reproduction of
the organism.
Nature picks the adaptations that will
survive
This happens naturally over time and
does not require the help of humans

Natural Selection

Who would
survive to
pass on their
genes?

Pollution
covered the
trees in a
fine layer of
soot.

Now, who
would survive
to pass on
their genes?

Selective Breeding
the process of selecting or choosing
specific plants or animals to breed for
particular desirable genetic traits
Organisms which are selectively bred
are called domesticated. The breeding
is usually done by a professional
breeder.

Examples of selective breeding:

Prize-winning racehorses
Cotton plants that yield strong fibers
Large, juicy tomatoes
High yielding corn kernels

Selective Breeding
Bred animals are known as
breeds, while bred plants
are known as varieties.
