Library Technology Mission Statement

The mission of the Hinsdale Township High School District 86 Technology Plan is to keep pace
with new technology while teaching students to be responsible and effective users of technology.
The district will aim to provide teachers with training to prepare them to enhance pedagogy
through the use of the most current professional development practices in the use of
technological resources. The district will ensure that students are prepared for using technology
in the pursuit of higher education and careers.

Technology Needs Assessment

District 86 schools completed the Hinsdale technology survey during the first semester of the
2013-2014 academic year. These surveys provided the district with the basis for a general needs
assessment for the use of technology in the District 86. To address the needs of library users in
regard to technology, web-based surveys were developed to collect information about technology
use.

Teacher/Staff Survey
Teachers and staff were asked questions regarding their current technology use in the library.
Questions included: Do you use the LCD projector in the library instructional areas? Do you
have a sufficient number of computers while in the library? Do you feel the wireless access in
the library is reliable? In addition to the pointed questions, the survey solicited information
regarding their satisfaction with technology and suggestions for improvement.
Three hundred and thirty seven teachers and staff members provided feedback in the
survey. The responses were evaluated by certified district librarians to determine teacher and
staff needs.

Student Survey
A web-based survey was constructed and e-mailed to all students to determine student
technology needs. Items in the student survey included questions such as: Do you have ample
computer access in the library during the school day? Do you feel there are a sufficient number
of printers available for use? Do you use electronic books through the librarys subscription to
Overdrive? Students were solicited for their feedback on the current available technology in the
library as well as suggestions for potential improvement.
Eighteen hundred and sixty three students responded to the web-based survey. Their responses
were tracked and evaluated by certified district librarians to determine student technology needs.

Needs Assessment Survey Analysis

3

After careful evaluation of both the teacher/staff and student surveys, district librarians
determined several areas of need for both groups. The overwhelming majority of both teachers
and students indicated a strong need for more computer availability, particularly during lunch
periods as well as before and after school. Teachers indicated that additional network access
points should be made available to the library in order to better support network access. Students
indicated that they would like to have more portable devices (iPads, e-readers, MP3 players)
available for checkout to use in conjunction with library resources.

Goals and Objectives

Goal: To provide staff and students with a library rich with technology where they can thrive in
the use of new tools and grow as ethical users of technology.
Objective 1: Demand ethical use of technology by students during the use of the library through
modeling and defining expected behavior.
Objective 2: Continue to support teachers and classes in the use of technology during library or
lab time.
Objective 3: Obtain appropriate hardware and software in partnership with the Information
Technology Department in order to support the school community.
Objective 4: Provide staff with the support that the need via professional development as well as
collaborative partnerships in which technology is integrated into instruction.
Objective 5: Provide the school community with the most current mobile technology possible by
introducing new technologies whenever appropriate and economically feasible.
