Differentiated Literacy Projects

Wonder
High Ability Choices
As we read Wonder, you will be completing three projects. Below, I have listed nine
different activities that you can choose from. Pick your top three, and complete them
by the time we finish this unit in four weeks. You can work as quickly as you want,
but you do have to make sure that all three projects are turned in at the end of this
unit. Use your time wisely. Additionally, the asterisked choices have separate
handouts, so make sure to read all directions. Have fun, and feel free to ask me any
questions you have about your projects!

Just like August, draw a

Sign Language Activity
Auggie had to get hearing aids in order for him to hear since his hearing had gotten
worse over the years. Without the hearing aids, Auggie might have lost his hearing
all together, and would have needed to learn sign language. Research some sign
language using the following materials, and then learn how to say the following
paragraph in sign language. You will perform this for the class on the day we turn in
all projects.
This is the paragraph you will need to learn how to sign. Fill in the blanks with your
name, favorite color, and favorite food:
Hello, my name is ________. I am a student. My favorite color is ________. My favorite
food is _______. I like/do not like dogs. This is me.

Twitter Activity
You will make a Twitter account for one of the characters in the novel. You will not
actually register this account on Twitter, but rather, you will create at least 20
tweets from the character you choose. Create a Twitter name for your character and
any other characters you might be tweeting to. Make sure to identify the characters
name with the twitter name. (ex: @summersun = Summer) Then, find a picture to
put into your twitter word document. Finally, create your tweets and make sure
each of your tweets each have 160 characters (letters, spaces, punctuation) or less.
If you use any quotes from the book in your tweet, make sure to hash tag the page
and paragraph numbers (#page103paragraph2). Here are some examples of tweets
that you could compose. DO NOT USE THESE AS YOUR OWN.

Digital Scrapbook Activity
You will make a digital scrapbook for one section of the book. The sections you can
choose from are:

Parts 1-2
Parts 3-5
Parts 6-8

Make sure you cover all the Parts of your section. You dont need to choose a picture
for each chapter, but just be sure that you have at least 15 pictures in your digital
scrapbook. Give a brief description of each picture you choose. This description can
be your own, or it can be a quote from a character in the book. You can create this
scrapbook with Microsoft Word, Power Point, Windows Movie Maker, or another
program approved by me. Be creative! If you have any questions, feel free to ask!

Our Town Monologue Activity
Choose one of the monologues below and research the character. Use the website I
have provided to research that character. Then memorize the monologue. Add a
costume and props, whatever you think will enhance your performance. Try to put
yourself in the shoes of the character you are portraying. You will perform your
monologue with your costume/ec.. on the day that all projects are due. Enjoy!

Monologue Choices:
EMILY WEBB Oh, Mama, just look at me one minute as though you really saw me.
Mama! Fourteen years have gone by! Im dead! Youre a grandmother, Mama I
married George Gibbs, Mama! - Wallys dead too. Mama! His appendix burst on a
camping trip to Crawford Notch. We felt just terrible about it, dont you remember?
But, just for a moment now were all together Mama, just for a moment lets be
happy Lets look at one another! I cant! I cant go on! It goes so fast. We dont
have time to look at one another. I didnt realize. So all that was going on and we
never noticed! Take me back up the hill to my grave. But first: Wait! One more
look! Oh, earth youre too wonderful for anyone to realize you! Do any human
beings ever realize life while they live it every, every minute?
GEORGE GIBBS Im celebrating because Ive got a friend who tells me all the things
that ought to be told me. Im glad you spoke to me like you did. But youll see. Im
going to change. And Emily, I want to ask you a favor. Emily, if I go away to State
Agricultural College next year, will you write me a letter? The day wouldnt come
when I wouldnt want to know everything about our town. Y know, Emily,
whenever I meet a farmer I ask him if he thinks its important to go to Agricultural
School to be a good farmer. And some of them say its even a waste of time. And like
you say, being gone all that time in other places, and meeting other people. I guess
new people probably arent any better than old ones. Emily I feel that youre as
good a friend as Ive got. I dont need to go and meet the people in other towns.
Emily, Im going to make up my mind right now I wont go. Ill tell Pa about it
tonight.
MRS. GIBBS Myrtle, did one of those second-hand furniture men from Boston come
to see you last Friday? Well, he called on me. First I thought he was a patient
wantin to see Doctor Gibbs. N he wormed his way into my parlor, and, Myrtle
Webb, he offered me three hundred and fifty dollars for Grandmother Wentworths
highboy, as Im sitting here! He did! That old thing! Why it was so big I didnt know
where to put it and I almost gave it to Cousin Hester Wilcox. If I could get the Doctor
to take the money and go away some place on a trip Id sell it like that. Yknow,
Myrtle, its been the dream of my life to see Paris, France. It seems to me that once

Amy Stucker
in your life before you die, you ought to see a country where they dont talk in
English and dont even want to.
DR. GIBBS George, while I was in my office today I heard a funny sound and what
do you think it was? It was your mother chopping wood. There you see your
mother getting up early; cooking meals all day long; washing and ironing; - and
still she has to go out in the backyard and chop wood. I suppose she just got tired of
asking you. She just gave up and decided it was easier to do it herself. And you eat
her meals, and put on the clothes she keeps nice for you, and you run off and play
baseball, - like shes some hired girl we keep around the house but that we dont like
very much. Well, I knew all I had to do was call your attention to it.
MRS. WEBB I dont know why on earth I should be crying. I suppose theres
nothing to cry about. This morning at breakfast it came over me. There was Emily
eating her breakfast as shes done for seventeen years and shes going out of my
house. I suppose thats it And Emily! She suddenly said, I cant eat another
mouthful. And she put her head on the table and she cried. Oh, Ive got to say it
You know, there is something cruel about sending girls out into marriages like that.
Its its cruel, I know; but I just couldnt get myself to say anything I went into it
blind as a bat myself. The whole worlds wrong, thats whats the matter.
SIMON STIMSON Yes, now you know. Now you know: thats what it was to be
alive. To move around in a cloud of ignorance; to go up and down trampling on the
feelings of those of those about you. To spend and waste time as though you had a
million years. To be always at the mercy of one self-centered passion or another.
Now you know thats the happy existence you wanted to go back to. Ignorance
and blindness!
LOUELLA SOAMES Perfectly lovely wedding! Loveliest wedding I ever saw. Oh, I
do love a good wedding, dont you? Doesnt she make a lovely bride? Dont know
when Ive seen such a lovely wedding. But I always cry; dont know why it is, but I
always cry. I just like to see young people happy. Dont you? Oh I think its lovely!
Arent they a lovely couple? Oh, Ive never been to such a nice wedding. Im sure
theyll be happy. I always say; Happiness thats the great thing. The important
thing is to be happy.

Song Lyrics Activity
Each part of the book is introduced with a quote from a song. Choose any song that
is school appropriate that you think would describe one of the parts. (It cannot be
one of the songs in the book already). Include the lyrics to this song and pull out the
quote you find best suits that part of the book. Then write a paragraph about why
you chose that song and how the quote applies to the book. Make sure that you get
your song approved by me before you do this project, as it does need to be
appropriate for our class.

http://library.thinkquest.org/3645/universe.html
http://www.neok12.com/Universe.htm (Watch these videos to learn even more
cool facts!)
Your poster should have at least 10 facts and 5 pictures. You can include any
information you would like from these websites, from the size of our galaxy to the
existence of black wholes. Have fun with your research, and learn some new things
about the universe! If you have any questions about the information on these
websites, dont be afraid to ask me. Like Justin, the universe fascinates me, and I
hope you can be too!
