Exam Question: Outline and explain advantages and

Disadvantages of Nokia having a global division of Labour.

Rahma

Nokia has a global division of labour. This means that it breaks up all its jobs up all its jobs all over
the world. This is an advantage because this creates more job opportunities outside of poorly pair
primary sector employment in LEDCs or NICs e.g. Mexico .This is good because this decreases
unemployment in the country and families could afford the basic necessities of life. This is good also
because money is invested in poorer parts of the world to improve infrastructure such as roads,
ports and airports e.g. Mexico. This is good because it allows citizens to live in a better environment
and live a healthier life.
However there are disadvantages for Nokia having a global division of labour. The disadvantages
begin with: workers having to work long hours, usually 6 days a week. Workers are also very low by
British standards. Some workers still have to live in poverty despite working very long hours. This is
bad because this means that the workers wont benefit from working such long hours and they will
still live the same lifestyle (in poverty) trying to make enough in a day to feed the rest of their
families. Companies have also taken advantage of the workers as they pay them very low wages for
working such long hours in the week but there are not much other alternatives a worker who is in
poverty has. Another disadvantage is air pollution: the increase in factories led to smog over cities.
This is very bad and unsustainable for cities in country because air pollution is bad for the
environment and in LEDCs/NICs there are many people in poverty and homeless, this means they
will find it hard to live as they constantly breathe in bad gases which is very bad for them.
