COMMON CORY MATH TRAININGS

Common Cory Henwood offers a diverse set of trainings for any setting, most notably at
teacher professional development workshops and conferences. Below you will find a
repertoire of possible offerings for such trainings. Combining the initial overview
presentation with another of the sessions at a workshop allows teachers to deeply
understand and be ready to adopt the innovative ideas, top-notch resources provided and
gives optional time in planning for implementation and creating tailored lessons.

1.
6 IDEAS for Common Core Math Transformation

otherwise titled as
Sal Khan and Dan Meyer Collaborating in My Math Classroom

This presentation offers an overview of the innovative approach Mr. Henwood uses to meet the Common
Core Standards for Mathematical Practices and meet the aspirations of CCSSM rigor. Each idea, found at
CommonCory.com, is shared alongside resources available to math teachers to transform their teaching and
break away from poor pedagogical practices. This training shows how to take the empowering words and
resources provided by the leading voices in math education, such as Sal Khan and Dan Meyer, and
demonstrate how to apply them to the day-to-day work in the classroom. Typically 1 hour

2.
How to Engage Students in Rich Math Problems with Multimedia
otherwise titled as
3 Act Math: Teaching Students to Formulate Math Problems

This session explores the fascinating world of 3 Act Math, a technique used by math teachers to help students
formulate mathematical problems from a real world context. That context isnt introduced by reading about
it from a textbook, but instead it is shown in its most engaging format, rich multimedia. Through videos and
pictures that perplex students and beg self-directed questions, students drive their learning and use math as
a tool to answer their own questions. * Options to create 3 Act math problems and plan their classroom
implementation are possible with longer sessions. Ranging from 1 to 3 hours

3.
How Students and Teachers Collaborate Digitally with Nearpod
otherwise titled as
3 Acts of Collaboration with Nearpod

This session introduces an incredible tool for collaboration in the classroom called Nearpod. With Nearpod,
teachers can view and anonymously share student work with the class to help scaffold learning, collaborate
and build upon student ideas when solving big problems.* Options to create Nearpod presentations and
problems to collaborate digitally on as well as including how to use Nearpod in coaching math teachers are
possible with longer sessions. Ranging from 1 to 3 hours and Requires Internet Availability

How to Utilize Khan Academy Effectively in My Classroom
otherwise titled as
Building Math Skills Mastery with Khan Academy

This session introduces possible uses of the thousands of videos and mathematical exercises found on
KhanAcademy.org. Teachers will learn how to work with these resources and how they can help their
students receive the necessary feedback they need in order to master and be fluent in the procedures of
mathematics. Teachers will learn how to set up their classes to track progress and help tutor students.
* Options to create classes, determine which videos and exercises are appropriate for their classes and
discuss how to implement Khan Academy as part of their grading scheme available with longer sessions.
Ranging from 1 to 3 hours and Requires Internet Availability

5.
What Might Performance Tasks look like and How to Prepare?
otherwise titled as
Embracing Performance Tasks with the MAP Resources

This session provides insight into a new form of testing that comes alongside the smarter balanced computer
adaptive assessment, namely the performance task. What are these performance tasks and how were they
developed? Teachers will see ways in which they can help their students prepare for performance tasks by
using the resources of the Math Assessment Project responsible for shaping the performance tasks.
* Options to plan grade level appropriate tasks, and reengagement lessons to build understanding, as well as
planning to use the scored tasks as data points to track student progress are available with longer sessions.
Ranging from 1 to 3 hours
