LEARNING DEVELOPMENT
What is it?
The teacher understands how
learners grow and develop,
recognizing that patterns of
learning and development
vary individually within and
across the cognitive, linguistic,
social, emotional, and physical
areas, and designs and
implements developmentally
appropriate and challenging
learning experiences.

How do I do it?
Each student is different and
its important that they get
one-on-one or small group
instruction to differentiate to
their needs. Accommodating
to students physical,
emotional, and developmental
needs is essential for their
educational well-being.

What inspires me?

Teachers who love teaching
teach children to love learning.

Development Practices
Weekly reading assessments help determine student assessment
on comprehension, vocabulary, and phonics. These assessments
help determine and with the technology our school uses is able to
break down what standard might need to be retaught in class, or
which standards have been mastered. This technology allows for
easy analysis on student weekly performance. Weekly spelling
tests on spelling patterns are also a good strategy to assess
students weekly development: have the students mastered this
spelling pattern, do they still need work, are there certain areas in
this spelling pattern that the student needs help with? For
example, I recently tested students on the -le spelling pattern,
one student in particular had a dicult time when there were
double letters in the word such as middle.
Many students who are struggling severely are receiving either
pull-out RTI services, or in-class small group Tier 2 RTI services
working on spelling patterns, comprehension, vocabulary, and a
weekly reading skill.

Respecting Learners
Knowing a learners strength and
boosting their confidence in
learning is important. If a student
is struggling due to a lack of selfconfidence, pointing out their
strengths and using them to your
advantage as a teacher is
important. I can then use their
strength and stretch their
thinking in a higher level thinking
about a topic, and allowing them
to be a learning coach in the
classroom to help those around
them.

Students learn in many dierent ways, which is why it is

important to provide options for students. Some students may
learn their spelling words when using them in a practical way,
such as writing, while others learn them more eectively through
repetition. Many students learn when it is through movement or
manipulation of materials, thus providing these opportunities as
options or as a class to work on is essential as well.
Depending on the students, breaks are essential. Allowing proper
and eective use of breaks within the classroom to maintain a
learning classroom environment is important. Understanding
each students needs is important as being able to accommodate
and find ways to incorporate their needs into the classroom.
If a student is not ready to move on to a new spelling pattern or
comprehension strategy, working small group with those to give
them the extra support that is needed after the lessons are
taught. If language is an issue, providing the support within the
classroom to understand the language usage and feeling
comfortable to ask if there is a question or misunderstanding.

When students are showing

growth and improvement,
complementing them on their
work goes a long way.
When I am at a standstill for how
else to direct my learner, I am
seeking out ideas from other
team members, administrators,
paraprofessionals, and even
parents. Parents know their
children best, and with their help
I can alter my teacher to best fit
all students.
