Grade: Kindergarten
Title of Activity: Count and Graph Pumpkins
Ohio Common Core ELA Standard:
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.K.MD.B.3 Classify objects into given categories; count
the numbers of objects in each category and sort the categories by count.
Student Learning Objective:
Students will classify objects into given categories; count the numbers of objects
in each category and sort the categories by count through whole group instruction
and technology integration to successfully count and graph five groups of
pumpkins with 100% accuracy.
Anticipatory Set:
Today we are going to graph pumpkins. Can anyone tell me what we do when
we use a graph? [Student responds.] Yes! We use a graph to record information.
Hmm I know that we used a graph to count how many students wanted to be each
community helper. What is another example of when we have used a graph in our
classroom? [Student responds.] Great! We count and graph the weather every
morning! Do we think its useful to count data that we collect on our graphs?
[Student responds.] Yes, once we collect our data it is very important to count it
like scientists! Lets turn our bodies to the Mimio to get started!
Instructional Strategies:
Whole group instruction
Technology integration
Academic Language:
Graph
Data
Count
Classify
Materials, resources, technology:
Interactive Mimio
Magnetic direction cue cards
Count and Graph Pumpkin teacher sheet (x2)
Count and Graph Pumpkin student sheets (x42)
Activities:
Activity 1: Guided Mimio Introduction
Teacher will actively model how to classify each of the pumpkins. In our case, the
pumpkins are the data that we are graphing. The teacher will show the lines on the

graph and explain that each line represents a separate number. Students will come
up to the Mimio to actively utilize the stylus and classify the pumpkins. Once the
data has been classified and graphed the teacher will stress the importance of
counting the data. Students will individually come up to demonstrate their ability
to one-on-one count each of the pumpkins.
Activity 2: Count and Graph Pumpkins
Students will turn their bodies to the rocking chair to listen to step-by-step
directions. The teacher will model how to complete the individual activity.
Students will then be called back to their tables to work on their own. Teacher
support and scaffolding will be available during the activity.
Closure:
Thanks for working so hard friends! We used FUN data today. What data did we
use to graph and count? [Student responds] Yes, pumpkins! Did we put all of our
pumpkins into one pile? [Student responds] No way! We had to classify and
carefully find the differences in each of the pumpkins. Hmm why did we graph
pumpkins? [Student responds] Yes, kiss your brains! We wanted to collect data to
count. I need a helper to come up and demonstrate how you counted your
pumpkins. Remember, we count each individual pumpkin separately. [Student
comes up to demonstrate.]
Accommodations for Special Learners:
Visual learners: Students will visually see the differences in pumpkins on the
Mimio board.
Auditory learners: Students will hear step-by-step directions to complete the
activity.
Tactile learners: Students are able to come to the Mimio board during the
introduction to actively utilize the stylus. Students will actively cut, paste, and
sort their pumpkins.
Speech IEP: Directions will be clearly spoken and visually shown on the board.
Student will sit near teacher on carpet to verbally communicate his responses.
Students who do not stay on task: These students will sit close to me on the carpet
so I can give positive reinforcement for listening and participating.
English Language Learners: N/A.
Assessment:
Informal: Through teacher observation I will monitor whole group instruction to
check student progress. I will actively check to see: Are students actively
participating in the Mimio introduction? Yes or No. If the answer is yes, we will
continue into the formal assessment. If the answer is no, we will complete the
Mimio a second time with additional teacher modeling.
Formal: Students will independently complete their own pumpkin graph. I will
check: Can students independently classify pumpkins into given categories with
100% accuracy? Yes or No.
