NAVIANCE and Student Success Plans

School Counselors coordinate and manage academic, career, and social-emotional support
services for each student to promote school success.
Post-secondary advising occurs both formally and informally. Counselors work with students and
their parents through group and individual advising sessions.
Our Goal: To make students and parents aware of the wide range of post-secondary choices
available and to help students narrow the field, find the right plan for their individual needs, and
work through that process.
A Student Success Plan is an individualized plan created by each student in collaboration with
their school counselor, classroom teachers, faculty members who may act as their monitor,
advisor or mentor, as well as parents / guardians. Student Success Plans are created to address
academic development, career development, and social / emotional / physical development.
The SSP is designed to help every student actively plan for their future, and to achieve their post
high school educational and career goals. The SSP begins in the 6th grade and continues through
12th grade. Each student is provided support and assistance in setting goals for social, physical
and academic growth, meeting rigorous learning expectations in the classroom, and exploring
post high school education and career interests.
In each grade level, students are presented with a variety of activities, programs and services
intended to build the 21st century capacities and learning expectations.
New Haven Public Schools utilizes Family Connection from Naviance, a web-based service
designed especially for students and parents to organize and document many of the tasks related
to Student Success Plans. Naviance is a comprehensive web site that you can use to help in
making decisions about colleges and careers. We use Naviance in the School Counseling Offices
to track and analyze data about our students college and career plans. Naviance will allow
students to:

Get involved in the planning and advising process - Build a resume, complete on-line
surveys, and manage timelines and deadlines for making decisions about colleges and
careers.
Research colleges - Compare GPA, standardized test scores, and other statistics to actual
historical data from students who have already applied from our high school.
Sign up for college visits - Find out which colleges are visiting our school and sign up to
attend those sessions.
