Engineering is the branch of science and technology concerned with the design, building,
and use of engines, machines, and structures. For our discourse community, we are both
majoring in mechanical engineering. Mechanical engineering is a field concerned with designing
and constructing machines, manufacturing, distribution, and use of energy.
Generally, the majority of people think that engineering is just solving simple math
problems. However, it is much more than that, it requires a lot of reading and writing. To be an
engineer there are many courses you must take at a university like: Calculus 1 through Calculus
3, Writing classes, sciences like Chemistry and Physics, business courses, and many more.
Engineers also work a lot with people. They do a lot of communicating and hard work to make
the world a better place.
Mechanical engineering majors are very diverse. They work in multiple branches of
industry, including transportation, power generation, and tool manufacture. The field for
mechanical engineering is rapidly growing and becoming much more competitive. Most
mechanical engineers focus on more broad ideas like mechanics, materials, or nanotechnology
during their last years of studying in school, this helps them to be selected for more specific jobs
upon graduating.
Mechanical engineers salaries are generally above average. However, that salary strongly
depends on experience and education. It is usually necessary to have five years of experience
making it difficult to find a job in this field. A Bachelors degree usually promises about
$48,426, a Masters degree $55,994, and a Ph.D. generally promises around $72,096.
There are many companies that seek to hire mechanical engineers. Some of these
companies may include NASA, Google, Boeing, Apple, Microsoft, GE Aviation, Walt Disney,

etc. Apple is a leading company in computational technology. A mechanical engineer working

for Apple would design, develop, and test consumer electronics and gadgets like next generation
displays. Being a mechanical engineer employed by NASA is very hard and a very prestigious
opportunity, these mechanical engineers collaborate with top notch scientists to invent and
improve many space and spacecraft projects.
Mechanical engineers all share common goals of improvement. They all strive to make
the world a better place through their designs and ideas. Most people dont picture an engineer as
someone who strives to better society, but through their innovative mindsets they all want to
make products that are more efficient and reliable to the consumers. Some examples of famous
engineers and their accomplishments towards this goal are: Thomas Edison, he invented the
incandescent light bulb and also filed over a thousand patents, which totally redeveloped the way
we live today versus the way people lived before the light bulb. Leonardo Da Vinci, was known
best for his art but was an undercover engineer; many of his drawings for inventions were not
discovered until centuries later. However one of his drawings was a flying machine that worked
very similarly to a modern day helicopter.
Since we joined high school, our passion for creative problem solving joined with our
interest in math and science and this has continued to inspire and motivate us to pursue an
engineering degree. What excites us so much about Engineering is that it encompasses a broad
range of disciplines in creative problem solving with math and science. Mechanical engineering
is one of the oldest and broadest engineering majors and its future is very bright. At the end,
being an engineer is not only having a degree, or sharing a love for solving problems. Being an
engineer means accepting our life to improve societies and enhance human progress. The role of

an engineer is extremely important, because an engineer has the duty to push the limits of
humanity's practical knowledge.
