Book Title: Apples & Chalkdust .

Quotes:
Accentuate the Positive- Many times its more effective to accentuate the positives
than it is to eliminate the negatives.
Student or Teacher- Overlook intimidation. Stand tall in the position which you
have rightly earned.
Listening- One of the best ways to persuade people is through your ears.
Dare to be different- The quest for equality dilutes the power of diversity.
Questions:
Student or Teacher- This is all too familiar to me. I began substitute teaching right
after I graduated college and had the same problem. My first day teaching, I stood at
the administration desk for 10 minutes waiting for someone to acknowledge me.
When I told them I was there to sub, they laughed and said they thought I was a
student. Of course they apologized for making me wait as well. I think we do have to
strive to look like the adult, not the student. Have you had issues with this? What
have you done to fix or avoid them?
Mirror, Mirror- Sometimes I am so tired during my internship because of all the
assignments and graduate classes we have in addition to student teaching. I have to
work hard to not let it show through to my students. Do you ever experience this
fatigue and or frustration? How do you deal with it?
Points of Interest:
Unprofessional Behavior- You need to be very careful when youre teaching. I know
that I am trying to make a connection with the students. However, we need to watch
what we say, especially to the opposite sex. I had never considered the measures
that must be taken to keep professionalism with co-workers as well.
Encouragement- It is true, everyone needs encouragement. I think it is important to
be able to make those connections with parents, who can help to lift you up.
However, sometimes your students will be the ones to bring you that
encouragement as well. I know when my students tell me, Its just not the same
without you Ms. Ruiz, I feel like I must be doing something right!
Friends- It is important to have friends that can support you in your teaching. This is
why I love the TEAMS program; it comes with a built in support system. We are all
going through the same experiences and act as a support system for each other
Order! Order!- I totally agree with this passage. Great teaching is so much more than
lesson plans and teaching content. Great teachers have to know their students, their
learning styles, their behaviors, where materials are in the class, ect. I continue to be
amazed at how much work and effort goes into teaching
