-Do not characterize students as victims
-Often they do not want sympathy
-Make sure every student feels safe
-Build on existing knowledge and experiences
-Build relationships
-Do not assume that they are low academically
-Let students borrow materials that are needed to complete
assignments
-Emphasize assets over deficits
-Help students see their learning tasks as meaningful
-Build strong relationships with students so that they feel safe in the
classroom
-Create a consistent and stable environment
