Assignment 3
During my interview with Carmen, we discussed a variety of topics to get a feel for what
she would be interested in as an experiential learning project. To start off, she was interested in
computer science as her intended major because she believed that as a field it was least likely to
be influenced by human error compared to humanities or other sciences. Currently she is in a
paid position as an assistant to the Physics Department, although she did comment that she did
not feel inclined toward secretarial work. As for extracurricular activities she did during high
school, she mentioned she had much interest in any type of dance. She commented she had
experience in a wide variety of dance such as Irish, hip-hop, and others. As for other performing
arts, she also played the flute. As for academic interests outside of computer science, she
commented her interest in art history, especially Spanish or European art. After the interview, I
brainstormed some potential experiential learning opportunities for her: an Explore Microsoft
internship at Microsoft, a study abroad program to the Netherlands through the UW Art
department, and the Indian Dance team at UW (considering she is a large participant).
One of the experiential learning opportunities I would like to expand on for Carmen is the
study abroad program at the Netherlands during the summer. Students will be residing at the
University of Amsterdam and be taking courses there. Although she expressed interest in
Spanish art, exposure to other Western European art could be an interesting and expansive
experience on her part. In addition, there is no language requirement, something she mentioned
she would not be interested in. The summer program will also offer 15 credits, which could be
counted toward a minor in Art History, another potential academic goal Carmen mentioned
during her interview. The program will cover Dutch art dating from 1400 to present day,
exploring artists like Jan van Eyck to Rembrandt to Rem Koolhaas. More information can be
found on the through the UW Art History departments website
