Matter and Its Properties

Review Sheet
1.Most elements are metals. The following are physical
properties of metals: shiny, bendable, and they conduct
heat.
2. An object that takes up more space than another object has a
greater volume.
3. There are 2 different elements in one molecule of H2O:
hydrogen and oxygen.
4. Particles in salts arrange themselves in a regular geometric
pattern to form crystals.
5.Most materials get smaller when they are cooled because
the particles have less space between them.
6. The periodic table is arranged so that all the elements that
have similar properties are in the same column.
7. Dew forms when water vapor is cooled.
8. Materials in simple mixtures can be easily separated.
9. In a solution, the substance that dissolves is the solute.
10.
Heating can cause the closely packed molecules to
separate from each other, even causing some molecules to
escape the container they are in.
11.
Describe the similarities and differences between
mixtures and solutions.
In mixtures and solutions, elements or compounds are
mixed together but they are not bonded to each other. In
mixtures, different materials are placed together but do
not form compounds. Simple mixtures can be easily
separated. A solution is a special mixture in which
substances are spread out evenly and will not settle. In a

solution, the solute is dissolved in the solvent. The

amount of solute that can be dissolved in the solvent is a
property of the substance.
