Lesson Title:
Create An Animal
Write a brief, yet concise, description of what occurs in this lesson (50 words).
What will students learn during the lesson?
In this lesson, the students will learn.. the importance of animal characteristics in correlation with their
environment.

Lesson Overview

Common Core/State Go to the state standards website: http://www.tn.gov/education/standards/index.shtml

the environment where it lives.

Students (NETSS)
met in this lesson

Go to the NEW NETSS standards http://cnets.iste.org/and select grade level (K-2, 3-5, 68, 9-12) appropriate standards/profiles that are being met in this lesson. Copy and paste
here.

2. Communication and collaboration- Students use digital media and environments to communicate and work
collaboratively, including at a distance, to support individual learning and contribute to the learning of others.
1. Creativity and innovation Students demonstrate creative thinking, construct knowledge, and develop
innovative products and processes using technology.
a. Apply existing knowledge to generate new
ideas, products, or processes
Clear, Specific, and Measurable NOT ACTIVITIES. Student-friendly. The objective for
Instructional
this lesson [learning outcome] should identify the A, B, C & D.
Objectives
Given an instructional handout, the learners will create a new animal and include where it lives,
what it looks like, its needs and how those needs are going to be met.

Prior Knowledge

What prior knowledge will the students have to have to be able to do this lesson? You
might look at the year before Common Core/State Standards to see what they were
suppose to learn before doing the state standard you chose.

The students should have basic computer knowledge prior to this lesson.
They need to know why animals have characteristics based on their
environment.

Dr. Susan Sutton, 2014

Need or Purpose

Why do students need to learn this lesson?

The ability to identify characteristics of animals in relation to their

environment is necessary to understand the world around them and
their own needs.
Teacher Preparation Explain what the teacher has to do to get ready for the lesson including activities such as
gather materials, bookmark websites, create research guides, schedule labs, gather
parent permission for fieldtrips, etc

The teacher must have the computers prepared and the software ready. The presentation and lesson plan
must be ready and the handout printed out.

Explain what the students do in this lesson that puts them in an active learning situation.
Active
Participation
Once the students work together in groups of 2 or 3 on the computer software, each student will
create an animal on their own.

Formative
Assessment

The criteria should directly align with the instructional objectives and standards. How will
you monitor student progress? Also describe your plan for providing feedback to your
students during the lesson?

At the beginning of the lesson, the students prior knowledge of the topic will be assessed. Then
the teacher will review all things unclear to the students.

Materials

List all materials and include how each will be used during the lesson. Must align with the
Instructional Objective

Computer for each group with the animal classification software pulled up, animal handout.

Instructional Procedures
Essential Question An Essential Question encourages students to put forth more effort when faced with
complex, open-ended, challenging, meaningful and authentic questions.

Why do animals characteristics depend on the environment that they live in? How does this
help them survive

Lesson set

Motivator/Hook - How will you open the lesson to motivate the students? How will you
relate this lesson to previous learning & to real life experiences, to explain the
importance of the learning to the students? (student involvement required)

Dr. Susan Sutton, 2014

Show students pictures of various habitats. Name some animals you might find in these places.

Techniques &
Activities

List the instructional procedures step-by-step, in sequential order as they occur in the
lesson. What will you do? What will the students do? How will you keep learners
engaged? Within the procedures a variety of classroom teaching strategies (methods)
are identified. Student centered activities are included as well as guided practice of the
learning is included.

-Detailed instruction. A presentation will be shown discussing animals and the reason for their
characteristics
-We will discuss the different characteristics animals have such as thick fur for cold climates,
and scales for the desert, and why these characteristics help them.
- I will pull up the online activity (our wild neighbors) and walk through what they will be doing
in their group
-Groups will be assigned
-The groups will work collaboratively on the computers
-Students will then work on creating their animal
Extension

How will I provide modified instructions for gifted students? I call this Gear-up.
Extensions are additional activities to expand the learning on the lesson. If students
finish early what will the supplemental activity be? - I will have them do.

Gifted students will be asked to draw conclusions from organisms that

lived in the past or present in which their animal may have derived from.

Remediation

How will I provide modified instructions for below average? I call this - gear-down.
Remediation activities include methods to re-teach the learning for students who need
more instruction. If a student falls behind I will ..

Students will be places in balanced level of average, below average, and

gifted students for the groups with detailed instructions.

Adaptions
Modifications

How will I provide modified instruction for special education? How will you adapt the
learning for learners with special needs? Choose one disability and tell me how you
would adapt this lesson for that disability.

Students with disability will be in the groups with the rest of the class and will be given the same
assignment as the rest of the class. Modifications may be made depending on the situation. Student with
special needs may illustrate the entire assignment if necessary.

CLOSURE

Reflection / Wrap-Up. How will you close the lesson, summarize the lesson content,
relate the lesson to future lessons & tie it to previous lessons? (student-involvement
required). How will I review subject-matter and purpose with students?

Dr. Susan Sutton, 2014

The lesson will close with the students coming up and talking about their animal describing it
and telling their class why its characteristics help it survive in its environment. The out of class
ticket will be telling the teacher one characteristic they have that helps them survive.

Summative
Assessment

Describe the assessment process that you will use to measure whether the students
achieved the instructional objectives. How will you assess the student
performance/mastery of skill? What are the criteria for achievement, and performance
level? How will you assess that students have learned? How will you monitor student
progress? The criteria should directly align to the instructional objectives and standards.
Also describe your plan for providing feedback to your students.

The summative assessment will be made while observing the progress of students
assignment. Then a test will be given when the students will compare and contras
characteristics of organisms from different environments.

NOTES:
This lesson will take no longer than one day.
